he Jubilee weekend was a wonderful occasion thatprovided us with an opportunity to celebrate andenjoy the fellowship of friends and neighbours. Theoverwhelming majority of us took the opportunity, as theexamples on page 4 illustrate. With this background, locally and nationally, instances of mean spirited or anti-social behaviour become highly conspicuous. Sadly therewere a couple locally. The Grand Parade at Overstrandattracted hundreds of people and as the last of this happy, orderly throng waited to enter the Overstrand SportsGround Sanders No 5 bus came up behind them. Despiteit being obvious the road ahead would clear shortly thedriver began hooting his horn and scowling at the generalpublic. The bus was delayed no more than a few minutes. It was clear from the expressions on the passengers faces, and the jeers from an otherwise good natured crowd, thedriver was an embarrassment tohimself and the company he worksfor.I enjoy living in one of the smallestvillages along the coast but eventhe Jubilee celebrations wereunlikely to justify closure of thecoast road for our street party. One of the few places it is possiblefor us to hold such a party is aprivate road. The permission of residents was sought and initiallygiven but then, remarkably andwithout explanation, withdrawn. This appears to have coincidedwith the return from holiday of themain protagonists in the refusal andis the second occasion they havesuccessfully vetoed a village streetparty. The first was the Golden Jubilee. Perhaps they are simplyanti-monarchists. Hard to knowwithout an explanation. TheDiamond Jubilee was an event few,if any, of us who currently live inthe village will see again. In the endthe rest of the village had athoroughly enjoyable ‘street party’at the Reading Room. The ingenuity, organisation andeffort put into fun and enjoyable Jubilee celebrations has beenremarkable. Locally the Teddy BearParachute Jump was but oneexample. My research shows thatthis form of low-risk ‘extremesport’ has a substantial followingnationally. Good to knowinvention, eccentricity, sentimentality, fair play, adventureand a sense of humour are alive andwell.
