NATIONALADVISORYCOMMJ3?I%EFORAERONAUTICSTECHNICKLNOTENO.1573FLIGHTMEASUREMENTSOFTHEFLYINGFIVIZIJGHTAIRPLANESByPaulA.HunterSUMMARYResultsarepresentedofaninvestigationQUALITIESOFmadetodeterm3.nemeasuremmtsofs~abflity,controllablli~y,endstallingcharac-teristicsoffivelightairplanes.Comparisonofthecharacteristicsoftheseairplaneswiththerequirementsforsatisfactoryflyingqualitiesleadstothefollowingconclusions:Thefiveairplaneswerestablelongitudinallyinmostoftheconditionstested.Thedegreeofstabilltyvariedconsiderablyamongthefiveairplanes,buttheup+levatorpositionrequiredtostallwithpoweronwaslowrelativetothsmaximumdeflectionoftheelevator.Thecontrolsurfacesofalltheairplaneseffectiveinproducingchengesinattitudeendabouttheirrespectivesxes.weresatisfactorilysngularvelocityWidevariationsindirectionalstabilltywereencounteredamongthethefiveairplenesoTheadverseyawwasconsideredobjectionableonairplaneswhichhadlowdirectionalstability.Thedihedralef’feetwaspositiveandgenerallywithfndesirablelimitsforalltheairplanestested.Thebsnkaccompanyingsideslipwasfavorablylargeevenatlowspeedsforallairplanes.Thepitchingmomentduetosiieslipwasgenerallydesirablysmallatsmallanglesofsideslip,althoughatlargeanglesofsideslipanappreciablenosing-downtendencywasmeasuredonseveraloftheairplanes.Stallwarningswereconsideredgoodforallfiveairplsnes,althoughtheensuinginstabilitywhichconsistedofarapidly

StallsfromturningflightwerepossiblewithpoweronatallspeedsInthreeofthefourairplanestestedbutweregenerallyimpossibleaboveacertainairspeedwithpoweroffbecausesufficientelevatorcontrolwasnotavailable.Theinitfalroll+ffinastallfromasideslippedconditionwasMthedirectiontocausethetrailingwingtodrop.Thesmallfixedwing-tipslotsononeoftheairplane=werefoundtohavenomeasurableeffectonitsflyingqualitiesorstalltngcharacteristics.INTRODUCTIONuuringtheperiodbeginningAugust31,1939andendingJuly27,1940,theNationalAdvisoryCommitteeforAeronauticsconductedflyMg-qualitiestestsonfivelightairplanes.Dataontheindividualatrplaneswerenotprepsredinaformsuttableforgeneralreleasebecauseoftheurgencyofmilitaryworkwhichhadbegunatthattime.ThepresentpapergivesasummaryofdatathathasbeencompiledforthepurposeofmakingavailablethefindingsoftheIVACAinregardtothestabilityandcontrolcharacteristicsofthistypeofaircraft.Theinvestigationcomprisedmeasurementsofstability,controlla-bility,endstallingcharacteristics.Theresultsarebasedondataobtainedfromphotographicrecordsofcontinuouslyrecordinginstru-mentssupplementedbyptlotsobservations.TESTSDescriptionofAirplanesDescriptivecharacteristicsofthefivelightairplanesaregivenintableI.Photographsofthefivelightairplanesareshownasfigure1andthree-tiewdrawingsareshowninfigure2.Allfiveairplanesweretw-placeorthree-placecabinlandnrmoplanesand,exceptforairplane2,allhadfixedI.andSnggears.Airplane4wastheonlyonethathadwingflapsand/orslots.Thecontrol+mrfacegapswereunsealed,exceptin
