Amani Public Charter School
It has been an honor for me to get to know you over the past year and I look forwardto continuing our relationship based on the mutual admiration and respect we havefor your children. Next year will be an awesome year! We are doubling in size andwill be joined by other fantastic children and families, and will expand ourcommunity. In turn, our teaching team will grow. We are carefully choosing teacherswe know will fit in with our culture, advance the high expectations we have for ourscholars and understand the flexibility and opportunities a charter school offers. We want to ask you to think about recycling your old uniforms by returning them tothe school. We want to be able to provide students who are out of uniform on a givenday with a loaner for the day. Please help us by bringing in any uniforms that yourscholar might have outgrown so that we can add it to our collection. We look forward to our summer gatherings where you can meet and get to know your
child’s teacher and we can all reconnect.
The first one will be on Thursday, July 5 at6:00pm for our Summer Reading Kick-Off.-Mrs. Debra SternAs we close out the year, I have been reflecting on all that we have accomplished inthe last ten months. And then I start to think about all that I still want to do at Amaniin the areas of curriculum and instruction. Next year returning scholars and theirfamilies will detect some noticeable changes. Among other things we will offer atechnology course that will utilize our two new class sets of laptop computers, areport card system that will give families a clearer sense of what their child hasaccomplished and immediate plans for intervention if they fall short in any particularsubject, and a new group of classroom teachers who will join forces with ourreturning veterans. The Amani staff is an incredible group of hard-working anddedicated professionals. I am fortunate as well to work side by side with them everyday and witness the love they have for children and the passion they have foreducation.Although most of our teachers and staff are returning, I am sorry to report that Mr.Dimatteo will be moving on to, literally, sunnier pastures. He will be relocating toFlorida and is either going to continue teaching or learn how to wrestle alligators. Weare sorry to lose him but wish him lots of success.I truly hope that everyone has a very restful and peaceful summer break. I will missthe parking lot conversations that we have had all year in the mornings andafternoons. I will see you again at the end of August. Enjoy!Mr. Bill Gladstone

Here are some summer health and safety tips:
Heat stress and heat stroke can be prevented. Keep kids well-hydrated, take frequent breaks when playing outside, andwatch for symptoms such as thirst, cramps, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and fever.
Be careful on playgrounds and watch out for getting burned on metal slides or other hot playground equipment.
Do put sunblock on your child 30 minutes before going outdoors.
Use insect repellents when necessary.
Outfitting your kids with appropriate protective gear, such as a helmet and pads, when they ride a bicycle, skateboard, orscooter, or while wearing heelys.
Do not let your kids play with fireworks. Instead, visit a public fireworks display this 4th of July.
Do not eat food that has been left out for more than an hour at barbecues and family picnics. This can cause foodpoisoning.
Teach your kids to recognize and avoid poison ivy.
Encourage your child to be active and eat a healthy diet all summer long!

Manhattanville
- This year has been a long year, with many difficult obstacles to overcome. However, as a class I amconfident when I say that Manhattanville has shown more progress than I could have imagined since the beginning of theschool year. I am proud of every one of my scholars and know that they will excel in the 6th grade. Great job everyone!!!
Mr. DiMatteo
Sarah Lawrence-
We had a splendid year in SLC. We learned so much in our reading and writing workshops that helped us tobecome strong readers and writers. We also learned a lot about how to sustain our earth in Science. It has been such a funfilled year and we have all grown as scholars. I look forward to seeing our rising 6th graders! Have a great summer!
Mrs. Jahaly
Iona
- Many of the scholars in Iona are now reading on a 6th grade level, even though they arrived to Amani below the 5thgrade level. I am very proud of the energy this class has brought to the school and feel that with a focus on self-improvement, Iona scholars will be leaders at Amani. Furthermore, as all good teachers say, "Don't judge a book by its cover".To finish this off with a quote from our new favorite book
The Journey: Solo
, "There is more to life than just fighting ordefending your honor...Like happiness. Like knowing that your parents are proud of you. Like knowing that you don't have tobe constantly looking over your shoulder..." Continue your love for education and you will be happy you chose APCS.
Mr. Karaban
UIC
- This has been a great year for UIC. Everyone, including myself, has been significantly impacted by the amount oflearning that has occurred. The scholars have made tremendous strides in all academic areas. I am proud of the growth Ihave witnessed both academically and socially. I remember when the scholars entered the class in September and struggledwith writing a paragraph within fifteen minutes, and now they effortlessly write three within that time frame. They havemade leaps and bounds in their reading levels and mastered the foundational skills needed to succeed in 6th grade math. Inaddition, they have acquired a sound knowledge of sustainability concepts and the five themes of geography. Moreover, thescholars have done numerous activities throughout the year to reach out to their community to make a difference. Asparents, you should all be proud of their growth and accomplishments. I know I am. I thank each of you for the privilege tohave served as their teacher this year. I wish everyone a safe, happy, and blessed summer! - Mrs. Earl
Physical Education
- Wow
, it’s amazing that the school year is over. I still remember the first day of school as if it wasyesterday. I’ve had a wonderful experience with my scholars and built great relationships with them along the way. I
noticed several changes from the first day of school to now. Not only are they entering the gym physically bigger and
stronger, they’ve also grown mentally and socially. My scholars have become
educated in a variety of physical activities, which I hope they will use during the summer. My goal as a teacher was to instill in students a passion for health and fitnessthat will enhance their well-being and physical skills. By having a positive attitude towards physical activity scholars arelikely to add it to their lifestyle which will help them reduce diseases, increase their well-being, and live a longer life. I wishall my scholars much luck and success in the 6th grade. I had a wonderful time being your teacher. Remember, physicaleducation is no
t a class…it’s a lifestyle! –

Music- A Magnificent Musical Year
What a fantastic year it has been for Amani Musicians! When our scholars first came to Amani, many of them could not readmusic and didn't listen to music with critical ears. Now, our scholars have mastered the treble staff, basic notes and rhythms, and can listen to music and hear more than just sound, but intricate patterns, meaningful lyrics, and hidden messages. I amso proud of what they have accomplished and am so excited to work with such talented musicians next year. A summerchallenge for Amani Musicians: instead of just movin' and groovin' to your favorite summer jams, LISTEN to them with atuned-in ear...who knows what wonderful things you may discover! Wishing you a fun, safe, musical summer!- Ms. McGlincheyIt has been a wonderful year working with so many great motivated scholars. Please continue reading and reviewing mathconcepts over the summer. Books can be brought to camp, the beach and the pool. They are also wonderful distractions tobring when taking a long car ride or on the airplane. Please read, read, read! Enjoy your summer and I look forward toseeing you well rested at the end of August! Take care. - Ms. Townsend
