Analyze how globalization and hybridization affect characters of different cultures Neo-colonization has paved a pathway for the

diaspora of western civilization, ideologies and norms enrich the traditional Bollywood film Masala, a debatable hybridization of two international genres. In the films Bend it like Beckham (2002) and Bride and Prejudice (2008) by Gurinda Chadha both illustrate this idea, where the manifestation of complications being faced by the characters in concurrence with the Cinematic and cultural conventions of cultural clash, Love and Family. The cultural clash between Indian and English cultures has created a hybridized film pastiche. A blend of conflicting traditional norms produce characters who symbolize the neo-diaspora of not just people, but also concepts embedded within each culture which are integrated into the contrasting side. This globalization affects all aspects of film and life in the modern alienated populous. The Bollywood genre has been globalized and slowly old-age ideas of what should be in film are falling off and are being replaced by English style conventions.
Culture clash

Cultural clash during the journey of freeing ones self from a steadfast built by tradition and customs in the lives of characters of the hybridized film genres results in a highly borderline synthesis of film. In the film Bend it like Beckham by Gurinda Chadha the theme cultural clash is evident throughout most of the film. Culture clash is the collision of two opposing cultures. Through the film, this is shown throughout many characters including Jesminder (jess), Pinky, Tony and the Bhamara family. Jesminder, who is the protagonist of this film, portrays the idea of hybridity of both Indian and English culture in her quest to fulfill her dreams in reaching professional soccer league. Traditionally, Indian women were not supposed to play soccer, expose themselves or let boys touch them all over. Jess is shown in her room in one scene talking to a portrait of beckham, were in the Sikh religion you pray to a guru (Babaji). Even though Jesminder wouldnt mind doing what she is supposed to do, like get an arranged marriage to an Indian boy, cover up etc she still wants to continue playing soccer, hence a cultural clash. But Jesminder makes these issues small as she says its just culture when confronting her teammates about her issues. Pinky, Jesminder sister, does almost everything shes is classically supposed to do, with an exception of a few westernized things. Pinky marries an Indian boy (Teetu) but ironically she would go out behind her parents back with him and have a pre-marital relationship, which is against typical Indian views. Also, the way pinky dresses is contradictory to original norms which is a loose fully covering Sari, instead she dress in very exposed western clothing. Pinkys obsession is getting married. When she finds out that Jess fancies her white soccer couch, Joe, Pinky tells her that Its not like before, Indian men dont wear turbans and are clean shaven now. These desires and opinions are clearly new to this generations and the major conflict in the film is the want for change against traditions that have been in place for thousands of years. Tony, Jesss best friend, is a very typical Indian boy till were told his sexual orientation I like beckham, I mean I REALLY like beckham. Even though Tony does everything else the Indian way his ideologies clearly intercept with what is considered correct beliefs. In the Bhamara family, the parents both usually act in clear accordance to original Indian/Sikh traditions. But as they live in an English society they have begun allowing their children to go into western ideas. They have allowed a love-marriage and at the end they gave Jess permission to join the pro-soccer womens

league. In the household, the classical matriarchal structure possessed by traditional Indian families flips over and a more western style patriarchal structure is formed. As shown the idea of Cultural clash is clearly conveyed within this film and strings together a perfect fusion of Bollywood and Hollywood conventions. Love

Love is an epic theme which runs its course throughout all culture of film from Hollywood to Bollywood. Love is a strong binding force between two between. In Bollywood traditionally film is composed of love triangles and arranged marriages, while Hollywood is based on love between a women and man. In the bend it like beckham opposite sex, same sex and arranged marriage is all conveyed within the film. Since the beginning the love relations between Pinky and Teetu where displayed as Pinky have a pre-marital relation, which leads on to a engagement an finally a wedding. This idea of marriage is a very common theme running through Bollywood film . Jesminder is also stuck in this idea of love, from the beginning the parents of both Tony and Jess believe they like each other. But further on through the film we discover that Tony is Gay, hence the concept of same-sex marriage and that jesminder falls for joe, the Hanslow Harriers couch. In the film the parents and families are against the fact the Jess could marry or like a gora or white person, even though Joe is from an irish background. In the film Juless mother grows an idea that jules is lesbian as she over hears a conversation between jess and jules. She cries about this as same-sex relations are traditionally a taboo within English culture. This clearly shows the power and popularity of love within this film. Family

In the bend it like beckham, by Gurinda Chader, family is greatly emphasized and is shown in both cultures exposed within this film. Family is generally a group of blood-related people. The idea of family within the Bhamara family is shown by Pinky and the parents. This idea is also shown in both Juless family. The bhamaras are shown to be a typical yet westernized Indian family who live in an English society. They have a perfect example of an average family, a set of parents and 2 kids. Family is one of the main factors contributing too many decisions made by the characters. Example, Jesminder refrains from going out with boys or gora to prevent befalling shame onto her family images hence declining the intended marriage between Pinky and Teetu. Also Pinky and Jess always help each, since theyre sisters, Jesminder would keep the fact that Pinky and Teetu were having pre-marital relations confidential while Pinky would always try and cover up for Jesminder. The parents in this family, show the usual characteristic of a parent, in some cases being supportive and in others setting strict rules. Jesminder isnt allowed to play soccer for her own protection as they try to look after her. Also, growth and development of family relations and the like are shown as Pinky ends up marrying Teetu and the parents end up accepting the fact the Jesminder wants to play soccer. The jules family, consisting of only a set of parents and a daughter, provide a western perspective on family. The father supports the idea the Jules wants to play soccer and defends her, the mother dislikes this idea but in the end as the family unionizes she begins to take part in her activities and educate her on soccer. As soon, Family is a truly powerful and binding concept which runs the backbone of this film.
