. Joan Lockley, assisted byhusband Steve, runs the Hedgehog Rescue. Centre We are an entirely self-funded centre. Joan is a registered carer and we are linked to the
. We rescue sick, injured, orphaned andabandoned HedgehogsWe cover the northern half of the West Midlands and the south of Staffordshire. Our aim is to act in the best interest of the individual animal at all times. Wenever refuse a call for help. We will either look after the hedgehog ourselves orfind another carer who can assist more easily.
Our Centre
We have recently created a new Hedgehog “Hosprickal” to take care of themany unfortunate hedgehogs we see. In 2007 we saw around 170 hogs in thewhole year. In 2008 from April to September we have seen more than 200already. Spring and early Summer have seen an unprecedented number of litters. We have seen almost 30 babies requiring 2 hourly feeds. At one time Joan was hand feeding 17 babies at the same time. These babies have to bekept awake throughout the winter, until they grow big enough to hibernate.
Costs
We have to find money for medicines and treatments, food, heating and travelexpenses.
●
Hedgehogs are treated for Lungworm, Ringworm, infections and wounds. We use a mixture of veterinary supplied medicines, over the countertreatments and homoeopathic remedies. Almost all hedgehogs aretreated for worms on arrival. On average, we pay 50p per hedgehog perweek for medicines. This works out at around £2.50 per admission.
●
Juvenile and Adult hedgehogs eat about one tin of cat food per night, with supplementary foods such as meal worms. We spend about 50p pernight per hedgehog on these foods, or around £3.50 per week.
●
Baby hedgehogs need special milk formula. We use a milk powder called“Esbilac” to start with, and then move the babies onto goats milk andhigh quality kitten food as they get older. Esbilac cost us £30 for a largetin. We have used four tins this year to raise 30 hoglets at a cost of £4.00per baby
●
Babies are kept on heat pads all day and all night. As they grow older, they are turned off during the day and on in the evenings. As winterapproaches our Hosprickal will need to be heated day and night toprevent underweight hogs from hibernating.
●
We regularly travel to collect hedgehogs from around the West Midlandsand Staffordshire. We do not keep track of this expenditure directly.
