In this vein it should not be forgotten that Christianity is itself built upon a penological conundrum. That’s why the crucifixion of Jesu is never condemned; it is, on the contrary, ‘celebrated.’ And were it not for those secular cultures which – contrary to religious societies – were first capable of creating a history, the barbarians would still be executing people, as they do in societies in the middle East, the Far East and the United States of America (and up to very recently, the Irish Republic) – the sacrificial bloodlust continuing ad nauseum merely to invigorate the defunct values of an imagined or religious past and the inability to create a history.
