f conservatism is a disease, DavidBrock’s group, Media Matters for America, believes it’s the cure.Of course, those fewconservatives who actually workin the liberal-dominated mediaare not infallible. A bona fidemedia watchdog that monitoredthe right and kept reporters andpundits honest might contributesomething of value to society, butthat’s not what Media Matters is about.Masquerading as an impartial media watchdog, it is the mission of the left- wing opposition research organizationto bully reporters into toeing the liberalline. Even the

describesMedia Matters as a “highly partisanresearch organization.” This raises theobvious question—why is the 501(c)(3)nonprofit tax-exempt? Radio talk-showhost Mark Levin slams Media Mattersregularly, calling for its tax-exempt statusto be revoked because it engages inpartisan activity, which is a strict no-no,according to the IRS.Come down on the wrong side of anissue and risk being labeled ignorantor evil by the smear Web site. Say thattax cuts lead to economic prosperity, and you’re attacked. Criticize illegalimmigration, and you’re attacked.Say affirmative action is racist anddiscriminatory, and you’re attacked.Republican pollster Frank Luntz gavethe

an earful aboutMedia Matters last fall. “I think they areone of the most destructive organizationsassociated with American politics today,”said Luntz, who conducts voter focusgroups on Fox News, one of the group’sfavorite targets.“They are vicious. They only understand one thing: attack, attack, attack,” Luntz said. “If I were a Democrat,I would tell them to shut up.”David Folkenflik, media reporterfor liberal National Public Radio, wassimilarly unimpressed by Media Matters.“They’re looking at every danglingparticiple, every dependent clause, every semicolon, every quotation to seeif there’s some way it unfairly frames acause, a party, a candidate that they may have some feelings for.”The group’s Web site, MediaMatters.org, relies heavily on personal attacks, rather than substantive or fact-basedarguments. It settles scores. Large swathsof the site are dedicated to skeweringspecific media personalities such asRush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, G. GordonLiddy and Brock’s former friend, LauraIngraham. What results is not even-handed analysis of what they say or write, but personal scrutiny, includingminute parsing and microscopic analysisof every comment and its presumedmeaning. Conservatives such as BillO’Reilly, winner of the group’s 2004“Misinformer of the Year” award, areattacked as though their opinions areinherently offensive and dangerous.Today, Media Matters is one of theloudest voices in the liberal media echochamber as it feeds hard-line left- wing media critiques to liberal blogs, sympathetic and lazy reporters, andpundits in an attempt to silence non-compliant journalists and muscle right-leaning media figures out of the publicdebate entirely.
Liberal journalist David Brock runs the lef
-wing media “watchdog” Media Matters. Brock, a formerconservative and admitted serial liar, is convinced that there is a right-wing bias in the national mediaand has a goal of ridding the media of conservative “filth.”
