GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE GRAVE ENVIRONMENT:
The gravesite of the Right Honourable Arthur Meighen is situated in St. Mary’sCemetery located on the southern edge of the small town and bordered along theeastern edge by a naturally wooded area. The cemetery was established in 1885 as anexpansion of the original Protestant cemetery located in the town’s core. In contrast tomany cemeteries of the period, which are laid out in the informal manner of thePicturesque landscape tradition, St. Mary’s cemetery features a regular grid pattern ofroadways lined with a variety of tree species. The cemetery is owned and maintained bythe Town of St. Marys. The gravesite of Arthur Meighen is located in section F, Plot 2 in the southeast quarterof the cemetery. Set on a gently sloped site, it is marked by a simple rectangular graniteheadstone. The flagpole and 125
th
Confederation Anniversary plaque are located belowthe stone just off the roadway. The awareness panel has been placed adjacent to thecemetery offices and it is not visually linked to the gravesite.

It was recommended thatthese elements be repaired but, as was pointed out by the cemetery manager, no actionhas been taken. The panel itself is in good condition and no repairs are required.
Recommended ActionHigh priority:
The black metal stand should be scraped, sanded and repainted and themissing bolt should be replaced.
Awareness panel. Rusted metal at the back of the sign. Missing bolt.

2. FlagpoleObservation
The flagpole is situated just off the paved roadway and at the bottom of the slopeleading up to the grave stone. It is in relatively good condition although the wire holdingthe bottom of the flag has lost its plastic covering and the bare wire is wearing away atthe black anodized coating of the flag pole. The metal cone covering the base of the
