PREFACE
The author of this book, Mrs Hester Travers Smith, is the eldest daughter of the lateProfessor Eward Dowden, and has for many years been a close personal friend of oneof the most distinguished scientific investigators of psychic matters. Sir William F.Barrett, in his introduction, says the following regarding the work of the author :
≪
We have here the personal experiences of a gifted psychic or automatist. Mrs Hester Travers Smith has given me the opportunity of being present at sittings since the development of her psychic power. I can, therefore, testify to the conscientious care, the patience, and the wisdom which she has shown throughout the experiments she has conducted, her whole aim being to enlarge our knowledge in this difficult but important field of enquiry.
≫

It will be of interest to intending readers of this important book toknow that some of the most careful conservative and responsible of Americaninvestigators have read this book and uged its publication.

FOREWORDI
N introducing this book to the public, I should like to say that my deepest thanks aredue to Sir William Barrett, who has helped and encouraged me in every possible way,and to whom I largely owe my interest in Psychical Research. I also thank the sitters atmy circle, who have always been most patient, friendly, and helpful; what I have writtenis quite as much a record of their work as my own. I am grateful to the Rev. SavellHicksand Mr. Lennox Robinson, both of whom helped me by valuable suggestions. And,lastly, I dedicate "
Voices from the Void
" to my friend and fellow-worker

"Dorothy."
