In the late eighteenth century, at the height of the Qīng Dynasty, China was the most populous and most powerful nation in the world. In the nineteenth century, however, the Qīng Dynasty experienced decline resulting from government corruption, economic depression, internal rebellions, and external invasions. From the mid-nineteenth century until the mid-twentieth century, China experienced a “century of humiliation” marked by military defeats in wars against the Western powers and the Japanese. This period marked the weakening of the Chinese military as it failed to modernize and fix its systems of corrupt and unorganized bureaucratic leadership. Attempts to re-strengthen the Qīng Dynasty were unsuccessful because they focused only on adopting modern technology while failing to learn from the success of Western political institutions in world diplomacy and political organization. The Qīng Dynasty finally collapsed in 1911-1912 and was replaced by the Republic of China, led by the Guómíndǎng political party. But the new leadership failed to unify the country, which was divided among many warlords, each with their own army. The Republic of China struggled to survive in a triple-war against defiant warlords during the Northern Expedition, the invading Japanese during World War II, and the rising Communist movement that would ultimately take over China. Communist leader Máo Zédōng led the Long March military campaign that paved the way for China’s Communist Revolution. In 1949, his army conquered Běijīng and Máo declared the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Since then, China’s military has grown to become the largest and most rapidly modernizing military force in the world,
