Glorious Years...
Om Swastiastu... How fast the time flies! In our mind we were just at our last years birthday party, and here we are having another birthday. We had such a blast last year, but this year we decided to have a humble celebration, just to keep in mind that we now turn 14. If we look back, there are many things that make our beloved magazine into what it is now. We have gone through and witnessed many of the best things and even the worst things that have happened on this island. Nothing lasts forever, they say, and so many things have changed so quickly. When we got through reading our previous issues we found many interesting articles that show how some places looked not too long ago. Within less than 10 years, places including hotels, resorts and restaurants have transformed dramatically into a more modern look; beaches and tourist areas also experienced rapid change. Although some would say that Bali has lost its old face, we cant avoid the fact that this island needs these changes in order to support economic growth. In the future, Bali will become one of the most important places for both trading and business as well as leisure in the world. The next Singapore perhaps? Its really fascinating how such changes can happen within such a short period. So we thought it would be fun to bring you the Past & Present. Not only to remember about the past, but also to remind us that such changes are already done, and looking back is just a waste of time. See whats ahead, fix whats wrong, and move forward. Happy 14th Bday Bali & Beyond! Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om The Team

Otonan, a Balinese Birthday

Instead of candles or cakes, there are incense and offerings in the Balinese birthday celebration known as otonan. This ritual is characterized by traditional ceremonies with prayers focusing on the religious value.

hat Balinese call a birthday party is different than the usual birthday we have. Where candles, cakes and abundant food are usually part of the common celebration, the Balinese birthday celebration known as otonan

so that they can get a more perfect life now. The date itself to celebrate each year is different from what they have on their birth certificate, because they dont use the Gregorian or Christian Calendar. Otonan is the day marking a persons birth according to the Bali-Javanese calendar, pawukon. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the pawukon year is not numbered. Each cycles after the other, continuously. Nor does it employ the heavenly bodies in its basic computation. Pawukon, from the word wuku, is based on calculating weekly cycles. Mind that the term week is written as weke in Middle English. One Pawukon cycle has 30 wuku, and each wuku consists of seven days. To simplify the calculation, most people say than an otonan falls every six months or every 210 days. The truth is that it falls once a year and one year consists of 30 months each month consisting of just seven days. These make up the 210 days. Thus, a Balinese celebrates his oton almost twice in each Gregorian year. The babys first otonan is carried out 210 days after the baby is born, and is the most important ritual during the course of his life. A newly born baby has not considered as yet a man or woman, but rather the manifestation of God descending to the earth. At this ceremony the baby is allowed to touch the ground for the first time, meaning that from this time onward it is considered a human being and may join in human interaction on the earth. Symbolically, the baby is released from a cocks cage. Another important part in the first otonan ceremony is hair cutting. Balinese believe that, in general, when a baby is delivered

is characterized by traditional ceremonies with prayers focusing on the religious value. Instead of candles or cakes, there are incense and offerings. Otonan is interpreted as a sense of gratitude to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi for every blessing given, and to make amends for past lives

The otonan ceremony is to purify the baby so that the individual will live succesfully and avoid various dangers in life.

Balinese believe that every baby has four spiritual siblings named kanda pat, or the four brothers, that accompany the baby.
the babys head first touches the dirty part of a womens body, her genitalia. Thus a ritual hair cutting is needed at this otonan ceremony to purify the baby so that the individual will live successfully and avoid various dangers in lifes journey. Like the Gregorian system where each zodiac has its own strength and weakness, the pawukon also forecasts that a baby born in certain wuku will have good and bad omens. For example, a baby born on wuku Shinta is believed to expect a short life. One born on wuku Gumbreg must be careful in water since they are forecast to be drowned. One born on wuku Julungwangi must be careful of wild animal bites. This bad luck usually is reversed through a mebayuh ritual ceremony. named kanda pat, or the four brothers, that accompany the baby. These brothers are also born together with the baby, physically appearing in the form of the fetal membrane, amniotic fluid, the Balinese baby ready to have his most important ceremony umbilical cord and placenta. These brothers are believed to assist in the delivery process and will always accompany and protect him during life. The otonan ceremony serves these four brothers so

that they will be willing to continuously protect their sibling. The second otonan and those following are celebrated in a simple and modest way. Only if the otonan coincides with full moon, then the celebration becomes more festive with the serving of suckling pig. The otonan is usually held at home, led by Pendeta, Pemangku (Hindu priest) or elders in the family. Text by Devishanty, Reprinted from B&B July 2003

Drum Green Label Whisky has the unique taste of 4 year old whisky that is good to have straight as shots, or mixed in a cocktail, while the Iceland Vodka offers an easy way to create a light refreshment to cheer up the crowd. Another option for spirits is Cointreau, where you can use the orange inspiration for a drink your guests will never forget. If youd prefer to serve wine, many choices of wine are widely available in those supermarkets or in wine shops. major tourist destination Bali has a special exception. Alcohol consumption is tolerated in this province and there are many stores where you can buy beer, wine and spirits. The price of alcohol is considered high as compared with neighboring countries, but still there is no real party without booze, so you have to be smart when choosing the right drinks that will please your guests. Men love beer, and surely beer is everyones favorite when other drinks dont work well. For those who want to buy large amounts of beer, they should head towards big supermarkets or hypermarts such as Lottemart, Hardys, Carrefour

FOOD AND CATERING

Food is of course very essential and for sure there is no party without it. When cooking is not possible and youre far away from home, trust the experts to bring the food. If booking a restaurant is too much, perhaps a small party within a villa or hotel room should be arranged, and dont worry too much about providing food. With the number of tourists visiting the island the demand for food providers for special occasions has been skyrocketing. Not only are restaurants getting busier, the number of catering companies are flourishing as well. More and more companies are competing and claiming that they can serve the best food within a short amount of time. A good example of food providers is BaliEpicure Villa Luxury Services. This company started their business about two years ago, and has become one of the most reliable services in the island. Founded by ISC Travel, a company with over twenty years of experience in hospitality management with its corporate headquarters in Europe and United States, BaliEpicure can manage any impromptu request, as long as the requested menu items dont require any difficult ingredients that are hard to get or have to be prepared far in advance. This quick service is also available for parties whose invitation numbers are not too many. From canaps, a sushi bar, Western or Indonesian buffet, the menu is mostly quoted based on minimum of 30 people. If you
40 BALI&BEYOND JULY 2012

wish to order for fewer guests, the price will be adjusted to your request; its as simple as that. BaliEpicure is planning to expand their business by providing a party venue, so guests can have less hassle when hosting a party. They also offer in-room dining and spa services for villa residents, so they can get ultimate privacy and 5-star hotel food quality. Another choice of a catering service is Dijon Bali. First opened

in 1999, Dijon Bali was the only gourmet delicatessen in Bali that sold fine imported goods in small sizes. Following on their success, the Dijon Bali Cafe arrived in 2001 and Dijon Bali Catering appeared in 2009. Today they do retail, some wholesale, and catering. Recently Dijon Bali opened its newly renovated caf, which is located in Simpang Siur and opened a new caf in Ubud. They can do parties and weddings, brunch or lunch, cocktails or canaps or even a garden party barbeque, so you know where to ask for good food service. Its all about preference said Erick Herdiansyah, the Assistant Food and Beverage Director the brain behind this ultimate collection, People like different flavors, sweet, dry, fruity, citrusy, chocolaty, creamy you name it, we got it. What is on the list then? Aside from the common martini creations you can find such as the lychee, chocolate or espresso martinis, you can find unique tastes like pandan, tamarind, aloe vera or something on the sweet side like butterscotch, cotton candy, rice pudding explained Erick. Only at Nikko Bali Resort and Spa you can find this extensive selection and not to mention unique tastes you must give it a try and who knows, you might just find that inner Bond, James Bond.

f you are a fan of action spy movies then you are surely familiar with the catchphrase Shaken, not stirred, made famous by Ian Flemings creation, James Bond. This of course referred to one of the worlds favorite drinks, martini the elixir of quietude, as quoted by the novelist, E. B. White.

This drink is basically a simple blend of gin and vermouth (or vodka instead of gin as Bond preferred it) created back in 1920s. But the martini lost its fame in the 70s and 80s when it was considered old-fashioned. But since the 90s, the martini has made a huge comeback with a new face or should we say, faces. New drinks with the use of the name martini or the suffix tini were born and became instant hits, such as the lychee martini, appletini, chocolate martini and espresso martini. But how many are there out there in the world? To satisfy your curiosity, why not head down south to Nikko Bali Resort and Spa? The resort recently introduced not one, ten or twenty but ninety nine

Hard Rock Caf

One of the most iconic places in Bali is the Hard Rock Caf, which is one of the most famous franchises in the world.

Hard Rock Cafe (Present)

Strategically located across from Kuta Beach, it is one of the most visited tourist sites where people feel obliged to take a photo in front of the restaurant when they are visiting Kuta Beach. The Hard Rock Caf first opened in Bali on October 8, 1993, on the famous and busy Legian street. It was the second outlet in Indonesia after Jakarta. The Hard Rock Caf Bali immediately hyped up the dining and entertainment scene in Bali. They were the pioneer to invite international artists to Bali such as Kool & The Gang, Chris Isaac and Rick Price. The caf that seated 162 people, and accommodated 300 people, soon felt the need to expand. On December 29 of 1997, the Hard Rock Caf decided to move to a bigger

location positioned nicely across from Kuta Beach and to build the Hard Rock Hotel as its next-door neighbor. The 2-storey restaurant is divided into three sections : indoor, front side and poolside balcony, with a total seating capacity of 500 people. For events the venue has a maximum 1,500 standing capacity and has staged artists like Arrested Development, Hoobastank, Earth Wind & Fire, The Temper Trap, Scissor Sisters, Angels & Airwave and recently Vertical Horizon. As soon as you enter the room you will immediately feel the rock atmosphere, with the giant guitar replica, museum quality rock and roll memorabilia, and continuous music being played on a flat screen TV, from classic rock to cutting edge, compiled by well-known DJ Mark Ronson.

In 2011, the Hard Rock Caf upgraded its front exterior into a more modern, attractive and fresher look with a Sunset Bar & Lounge providing a great spot to watch the sunset overlooking Kuta Beach, as well as to be used for private cocktail parties and small corporate gatherings. The poolside balcony, overlooking the Hard Rock Beach Clubs 3,750 square meter pool can cater up to 50 people for private birthday parties and the like. At this time, another renovation is underway at this music caf. Polishing the interior look along with upgrading its entertainment systems, this renovation is expected to be completed by the end of the year. But dont worry though, because guests still can visit the caf as the business is still open during the renovation.

For years people talked about the Deja Vu Club and Lounge as their favorite spot to spend their night with good beats and good cocktails. Strategically located in front of the Blue Ocean Beach, also known as Double Six Beach, this place has received many awards such as The Best Club/Dance/DJ and The Best Nightspot. Despite the continuous success, owner Johnson Sihombing decided to make a change. He closed down the venue, dismantled the whole place and rebuilt it from scratch. For seven months the place was closed for renovation, then last May like a butterfly coming out from its cocoon, the place emerged as the Dejavu Kitchen. Its no longer a club, but a new hip restaurant. The place has completely different look

PONDERINGPOINT

A THOUGHT FOR BALI

Bali has changed a lot over the years as a consequence of its successful tourism industry. What once were idyllic is now chaotic and abundant rice paddies and green fertile countryside are now ghting for their very existence.

t used to be a pleasure to drive around Bali and see only traditional houses and Mom & Pop stores lining the road. The mountains and seashores were unhindered in the distance. Now you see mostly mini marts, car dealerships, spas and shops selling the same handicraft products. Remember when Seminyak and Canggu had

incorporating Balinese design giving some areas a ramshackle look. This overkill zeal for building accommodations is ongoing and spreading to nearly every corner of the island. With her hospitality sector on the rise Bali has became a magnet for those searching for work. The population has risen but the safety level appears to have decreased. Bali was once known as very safe, but nownot so much. The isle of paradise will lose its appeal when people dont feel secure. Another problem Bali is facing now are the constant traffic jams. Where bemos were once king of the road, they have been usurped by cars and motorcycles. Well, we cannot blame the users, as the lack of public service to accommodate the peoples need for mobility forces the people to use their private vehicles instead of taking public bemos. Bali is faster-paced and people need greater mobility. Major car and motorcycle dealers, seeing business opportunities, are enticing buyers with easy installment plans to meet that need. To avoid traffic Trans Sarbagita bus service linking Nusa Dua - Batu Bulan has been pressed into service since last year. Simply

their share of rice paddies interspersed with restaurants shaded by palm trees, and ox-drawn carts slowly making their way along the small roads? Sanur was still a laid back, elegant resort town with small, intimate cafs, and the drive to Nusa Dua was an adventure in solitude. As the tourism industry grew, the need for accommodations skyrocketed. Life sustaining lush, green rice paddies and palm trees gave way to hotels, restaurants, shops and even malls, with the miles of previously unspoiled beaches now fronted by luxury resorts, largely inaccessible. Villas, private or commercial, sprang up in other prime locations. There was no stopping this building frenzy. Regretfully, not all construction developments have followed the golden rule of no taller than a palm tree and

search Trans Sarbagita on Facebook and you will see updated information. Unfortunately its available in Bahasa Indonesia. But lets not only see the problems, lets see how they can be solved. To note, the government has stepped up its efforts to overcome the pressing problems with the new Benoa Nusa Dua toll road and the Simpang Siur underpass. The underpass is under construction to alleviate traffic congestion. Villas and hotels that have transgressed regulations are being demolished and the Go Green Project for better environmental control is underway. Just last month Bali police announced the formation of a new task force that will be operating in the Denpasar, Badung and Gianyar districts, which provide tourists with rapid response in case of crime and accidents. Motorcycles are given to the beach patrol to ensure safer beaches. Look for the to Serve and Protect vans of Bali Guard Police for filing complaints on site. Another hope also comes when UNESCO adds the Balinese subak system to its heritage list. At least, with the recognition from UNESCO, the pride of this country that once was the pride of its agriculture will be well preserved, and will be spared the atrocity of being taken over by swank villas. Ideally, a formula for success that meets commercial needs without destroying everything in its path must be found. Or we may see a decrease of potential visitors as they veer away and go to other Asian dream destinations. Bali is still struggling to overcome her problems. Strangely enough though, it remains a magnet to visitors and people looking to make Bali their home. Maybe that attraction is in the vibrantly, open-hearted welcome of the island and the Balinese to all who come. Its an intangible reason that can only be felt. Some of Balis long-term visitors still remember how the beaches and tourist areas looked a few years back. This month we bring you some of those memorable photos from previous issues for those who are visiting Bali for the first time and for long-term visitors who want to refresh their memory. We also show you some recent photos to see the changes, taken by students of the Darwis Triadi School of Photography.

Dreamland
What was once a hidden haven, Dreamland has been transformed into a commercial public space, but is still breathtaking. The beach doesnt loose its magic although the surrounding area has changed into an entertainment complex. We can still remember how it took our breath away when we viewed the beach for the first time from the cliff, which has now become a club. Fortunately the beach still has public access but visitors have to pay more for parking.

This famous lane is a haven for backpackers with many choices of affordable accommodations, restaurants, bars and shops. Back then, the small lanes running between the main street and the beach were just sandy tracks, complete with palm trees, cattle and crater-sized potholes. In the 1980s, backpackers used to stay in Balinese peoples houses, as there were not many choices of accommodations. Poppies Lane gained international name from the first restaurant opened in the area, Poppies Restaurant, owned by Ayu Keni. BALI&BEYOND JULY 2012 59

Suluban
Suluban Beach is definitely the surfers most favorite playground in Bali. Its long solid wave is the real beauty of this place, and the surrounding is just a beauty bonus. Yet the big reef rocks strengthen the character and become a solid foundation for the buildings above it. Although there are more buildings now, the view is still breathtaking. During low tide, the wild shore become tame and transforms into reef pools. Take your snorkeling gear to see some of the sea creatures trapped inside the pools. But dont dare to jump into the water during high tide unless youre very good at surfing.

But then the worldwide hippy culture of the early 1960s soon changed the islands beach fate from a sleepy fishing village into a global phenomenon. Although Australians were the first significant amount of players in the Bali epic, it was Mike Boyum, a Hawaiian millionaire, renegade, surfer and drug dealer who was considered the true hero of the 1960s blockbuster. The son of an army commander in the Vietnam War, Boyum didnt follow in his father footsteps, rather hippying across Bali and Javas surfing beaches. He changed the quiet Kuta into an overnight sensation when he brought in several Thai nude models, photographing them along the Kuta beach and sending the photos to international publications across Europe and the USA. Kuta changed its fate forever from that moment. Albert Falzons Morning of the Earth, a commercial and successful surf movie in the early 1970s, also hugely helped place Bali on the worlds surfing map. Entitled with the famous citation of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru when he visited the island in the 1950s, Morning of the Earth featured the islands pristine beaches with Uluwatus powerful waves being the magnetic Mecca occupying the mind of every surfer watching the footage, with the American big wave rider Rusty Miller being the action hero

ever-smiling Balinese and their unique and undisturbed Hindu culture and tradition remain the chief magnet attracting such a huge number of visitors every year, it is actually the islands outdoor attractions that drove the figure to quadruple in a matter The islands adventure industry developed from the very dawn of the hippies surfing culture of the 1960s to todays diverse sorts of appeals ranging from diving, rafting, biking, trekking & hiking, water sports, and four wheel drive adventure to an extreme assortment such as bungy jumping or sling shot and paragliding, or some a lot more sober like Canyon tubing or enduro dirt motor biking. Lets have a random look of them, and perhaps after this you would start booking an attraction.

SURFING
The islands surfing industry was first introduced by Californian surfer photographer Robert Koke in the 1930s. He also established Kutas first resort, thus named Kuta Beach Hotel

CYCLING
Compared to other provinces in Indonesia, Balis roads are more challenging. In more remote areas, the roads lack proper road facilities and traffic management. Todays travelers who wish to explore the hidden parts of the island need extra work to track the right path, as there is no way possible except to follow single trails designed for walking or animal paths. But this was the reason that drove the mountain biking and trekking industry to blossom. Pedaling along narrow tracks between rice fields, or amidst rainforests from one mountain down to another, or from traditional, old styled villages down to town, everything is as challenging as discovering the old Balinese way of life, light-years away from the modern, heavily trafficked areas of Kuta, Nusa Dua, Sanur or Ubud. What else but on a push bike you could enjoy the islands beauty untouched by modernity. Nevertheless, cycling is now getting back its past glory. Amidst the proliferation of Japanese light motorbikes, there are more and more people traveling by bike. The government is supportive though. For example in the civic center section of Renon in Denpasar, a car free day program has been applied once a week since three years ago. Thus every Sunday, this part of town is closed to any vehicles, including inside the many hollow waves. Surfing is now one of the islands largest industries, with the worlds top brands including Quiksilver, Billabong, Hurley, Rusty, Surfer Girl, and Rip Curl to mention a few, driving multi-millions of dollars into the island economy. Although very packed, Bali is still a favorite surfing destination, which offers spectacular waves on

each side of the island all year around.

RAFTING
Balis rivers have been home to various sports ranging from kayaking, fishing, rafting, canoeing, and canyon tubing, beyond their original occupation as the source of water for showering and irrigating the endless green foliage of the rice paddy fields. Among all the sports, however, it is the river rafting that really developed into one among the must-do activities. The wide variety of choices from family level to Class 3 to 4 professional, easy access and the amazing scenery ranging from vertical gorges, rice fields, rain forests and waterfalls along the way, plus the professional yet ever smiling Balinese guides, are among the reasons that made the industry boom. Today, it is not surprising to learn a group of over 100 raft boats raced one against another in a fun, exciting environment to promote a team building spirit. Rafting is one among the best to boost, for example, a companys bigger goals among workers in a really fun and rewarding experience. Windsurfing in Tanjung Benoa

Guests who stay a minimum of six-nights would benefit from various free programs, including the unlimited use of pushbikes in each of the 20 hotels. BUNGEE JUMPING
Bungee jumping was one of the most sought-after many travelers to Bali as well as local residents were eager to experiment with it, testing out their guts and (wo)manhood. But perhaps the current

generation of travelers is not as brave and courageous as those of the 1990s, who were crazy enough to show off their bravery and guts by leaping from a 45 meter high tower, attached to nothing but a rubber cord. Who knows! There was no such rush of excitement and curiosity as when Balis first bungy jumping took their operation. Within two years or so, there were not less than seven bungee operators across the island. A Kuta-based bungee operator even combined a jump facility with other adrenaline-pumping sports such as wall climbing,

in what was called an Adrenaline Park. The adrenaline rush seemed to run aground too soon, as fast as the excitement and exhilaration of the jump itself, which normally took less than 30 seconds. Although some bungee operators tried to develop and modify various tricks, such as market was not that crazy yet to accept such an extreme activity. A more adrenalin friendly and safer idea soon followed. Instead of jumping to the ground pulled by the gravity, a new model of jumping was instead against it. Like a catapult, a seating harness complete with safety belt is attached to rubber cords. After being securely seated, a mechanical trigger was pulled, releasing the passengers and catapulting them into the sky. Yet since the passengers seat was firmly attached to the cords, there was no

chance for the client to escape into the sky. Well, if you ever watch Tom & Jerry cartoon series, you would get the idea. Nevertheless, the sling shot, as the new game was known, has never really become a great success commercially. When AJ Hackett, the last surviving jump operator, announced the termination of their business in Bali last year, it was indeed the end of the adrenalin game, for both the bungee and the sling shot. The novel was made into a movie in 2008, shot entirely on the island, which revealed Belitung in all its glory with white sandy beaches, crystal clear and calm water, and the magnificent granite rocks on the shore. Soon thereafter, Belitung made it to the list of the top ten must-visit places in Indonesia. Now the tourism industry is thriving on the island. With its short 45-minute flight from Jakarta, this place is getting packed with travelers who fly into the area to see the real beauty with their own eyes. People come from all over Indonesia and overseas to soak in the fascinating scenery of the island, which has many nicknames including the Granite Paradise and the Caribbean of the East. Its heritage is from the islands Chinese immigrants, a simple noodle soup with sliced tofu, cucumber, bean sprouts, boiled potatoes and shrimp. This delicious noodle is best recommended for breakfast, to add nutrition before setting off to explore the island. It only takes 20-minutes to drive to the white sandy beach of Tanjung Tinggi. The size alone is a sight to behold, not to mention that there are so many of them, as if they are simply sprouting from beneath the sand. The beach stretches for 1.2 kilometers, perfect for a nice relaxing stroll with no big waves. Its also a paradise for swimming around and enjoying the warm tropical clear turquoise water. There are small eateries selling fresh seafood and coconut drinks by the beach, which makes it popular destination among visitors. But unlike Tanjung Tinggi, the list of accommodations varies from mid to low budget. Continuing this dream trip, take a wooden boat from Tanjung Kelayang to do

some island hopping to the neighboring islands that are all uninhabited. Its as easy as renting a boat, then when you spot an island, stop the boat and hop out! Best to depart early in the morning and then land at Pulau Pasir if it is low tide. Not exactly an island, Pulau Pasir is a huge mound of sand that will be completely submerged with the high tide. Therefore it is best to visit this island first before hopping to other islands, as it will be completely gone when the tide is high. The surrounding water is so clear that a starfish

swimming in the sea bottom is clearly visible from above. This beach is also a really good spot for snorkeling. A second must-visit island is Lengkuas Island, the only small island that is actually inhabited. Standing alone on the tiny island is an old lighthouse from the Dutch colonial era that has been around since 1882. The actual height of the lighthouse is unknown, but it is approximately the same height as a 12-storey building. The view from the top is simply breathtaking, as one can enjoy a 360 view of the whole island

from this site. There is nobody else living on this island, only the caretakers of the lighthouse. On the way to Lengkuas Island there is no way to miss Bird Island. Dont go past it, hop out and make a visit. The birdshaped boulder is the icon of Belitung and has become the background of many, if not all, visitors holiday photos taken on the island. A walk to this bird-shaped boulder is possible only during low tide. However, caution is to be exercised as the coral reef and shells at the lower part of

the boulder are pretty sharp. Sea urchins are commonly found on the boulders, but the south area is pretty clean and good for swimming as the water is shallow and calm, without any coral reef around. Another island worth visiting is Babi Island. The place is completely empty and home to giant granite stones that sprout up all over the island. Like in other places in Belitung, the rocks are majestic and the hugeness of it will blow your mind. Nobody knows why the island is called babi or pig, as there are no animals living on the island.

travelers interested in a night stroll still can have an eventful night at Belitung. Take a walk to Tanjung Pandan for starters, as this place offers delicious chili crab from the many seafood joints. In this quiet neighborhood, the perfect thing to do is to grab a blanket and sit on the beach to stargaze. The stars are incredibly brilliant, so it makes up for the lack of entertainment after sundown. The sight of the full star studded sky can spoil the eyes and create a memorable night to remember. The best time to visit Belitung is between March and November. During this period of time the sea tends to be quieter, making for perfect sailing. Between December and February the waves tend to be stronger and it can rain for days. There isnt any other place in Indonesia The history behind the name remains a mystery. Marking the last visit in a Belitung island hop is Pulau Batu Berlayar, or the Island of the Sailing Rock in English. It is very close to Tanjung Kelayang, less than 20 kilometers away, but swimming
72 BALI&BEYOND JULY 2012

to the island is not advisable because the water is quite deep. And just like the name suggests, there is a rock formation that resembles a sailboat. Unlike other popular beach destinations, Belitung doesnt offer any nightlife attractions, but fear not because

that is blessed with that many unique small islands that consist only of piles of stones and nothing else. And for that reason alone, you need to book your trip to Belitung pronto. Text by Patricia Ivana Photos by Josua Alessandro

but the company managed to survive by targeting more local customers. With the revival of Indonesias political situation and the increasing economic growth, Downing Street now gets more domestic clients from the A+ level of society and the hospitality industry throughout the country, although expatriates are still dominating the demography. The key element that differentiates Downing Street from other furniture makers is the style that the owner choses. With so many emerging minimalist interior design lines in Jakarta, Downing Street provides warm French country and chicstyles that can be distinguished by the use of light colors and fleuron engravings framing their products. American-style furniture has a hefty impression while the French country style is more romantic. It is one of the most popular looks today that combines spring to summer gradients, purple tipped green grass and soft ocean tones. Downing Street merges the style with several finishing techniques that will make the pieces appear rustic, as they were hundreds of years ago. Currently, there are more than 300 items in the store with prices ranging from Rp. 25,000 for smaller items such as animal-shaped wooden statues to Rp. 27.8 million for a grand Spanish Splendour display cabinet. Most of the pieces are

In Jakarta, the Jalan Surabaya Antique Market is always the must-go spot for antique hunters or those who have a Romantic preference to adorn their life. It is an unusual open-air market where travelers get the opportunity to own a piece from the days of yore. Ideally located at the

eastern tip of the luxurious Menteng, this tree-lined street market is easy to reach and has hosted several important guests, such as former US President Bill Clinton when he visited Jakarta back in 1994. The market in Jalan Surabaya was established and designated as one of Jakartas tourism destinations in 1974 by Governor Ali Sadikin. Previously, the street was a meeting point for antique merchants who sold their goods by carrying them around Kota Tua Jakarta until some of

them began trading on the sidewalks selling china, the market has evolved and became a treasure box. The dealers maintained the cluttered thrift store-style because, according to them, thats what attracted buyers. Most of the sellers on Jalan Surabaya are second and even third generation traders who inherited the stores from their parents. There are 184 shops along the street, all offering unexpected treasures

puppets, Nusa Tenggara weavings and necklaces. However, there are several vendors such as store number 141, the only air conditioned shop on the street, that sells only old phonograph records, or store number 147 that sells various kinds of vintage books and cameras. Traders on the first block of Jalan Surabaya sell used suitcases and golf clubs. Prices vary from Rp. 10,000 to around Rp. 20 million. A small desk ornament for example is Rp. 50,000 and a crystal lamp is Rp.15 million. The prices are not from the past. Tourists will need at least two hours just to window shop on Jalan Surabaya and to choose from a wide range of brasswares, porcelains and household appliances. There are no real classifications of stores because most of them sell the same objects, such as old wall clocks or chandeliers and nautical equipment such as telescopes, compasses and diving bells. There are also traditional accessories such as Javanese hairpins, wayang golek fixed though, and the sight of customers bargaining is common in this area since most of the time the sellers are just opening the bargain like in any other tourism locale. Most traders can speak simple English so there is less of a language problem. Potential customers should be mindful before buying because theres a general belief that not all the objects being sold on Jalan Surabaya are genuine antiques and are made in studios not far from the stores.

This problem can be tackled by taking along an antique expert friend as company and by asking detailed and thorough questions to the sellers. Be as inquiring as possible. Buyers should also note that not all items on Jalan Surabaya are still working, but usually the sellers will tell you whether the beautiful round glass clock or old telephone they sell is still functioning or not. This shouldnt matter for shoppers who just seek for the portrayal of yesteryear, but if not the dealers can advise you on where to fix the objects. Text by Shinta Eka

TIME
Love to surf? Bali is known as one of the worlds most favorite surfing destinations, where waves are always available. In wet season most of the surf is on the eastern side of the island, but this time of year (until approximately October) the best area to surf is on the west coast. Uluwatu, Padang-Padang, Impossibles, and Balangan have world-class waves for experienced surfers, while beginners can try Kuta Beach to sharpen their skills. Jimbaran, Dreamland, and Canggu are other options but if you want less crowd spots, try to go further west to Medewi or Balian for a more relaxing time.

HEALTH&MEDICAL
Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctorprescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace uids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
