aswe knowto-day,thereare extantnocompletecopiesofancientCopticmanuscriptsoftheGospelofSt.Luke.TheSahidicCopticmanuscriptofSt.Luke,whichis now in theposses-sionofMr.RobertGarrettofBaltimore,is thereforeofvery greatimportanceinthestudyoftheCopticGospels.TheGarrett manu-script,which iswritten inwell-drawnuncials onparchment,prob-ablywascopiedinthesixthcentury.IntheAlbumdePaleographieCoptepourserviral'introductionpaleographiquedesActes desMartyrsdeI'EgyptebyHenriiy-vernat,Paris-Rome,1888,plate3is areproductionofpages20and21 ofamanuscriptfromtheBorgianCollection,No.246,Naples,whichisassignedtothe sixthorseventhcentury.Acomparisonbetween thisplateand theGarrettmanuscriptshowsrathercloseresemblancesintheformation oftheletters.WhiletheBorgiancodex ispracticallyconstantinhavingasingleform ofM andx,we have twotypesoftheseletters intheGarrettmanuscript.Onplate4,Hyvernat, op.cit.,wehave areproductionof amanu-scriptwhich tooisdatedabout thesixth orseventhcentury.Theeandthe&oftheGarrettmanuscript resemblethose oftheplate.The twotypesofMalsohave theircounterparts onplate 4.Onthebasis ofthesecomparisons,themanuscriptapparentlybelongstothesixthorseventhcentury.Furtheraidindatingthemanuscriptisfound inW.H.Worrell'sProverbsofSolomoninSahidicCopticaccording totheChicagoManuscript(UniversityofChicagoPress,1931).Speakingofthedate ofhismanuscript,Worrellsays(xi):"ThehandoftheChicagomanuscriptwould,intheabsence ofotherevidence,bedatedconservativelyas ofthesixthcentury; andthiswouldseemtobedemandedbytheroundedepsilon,ontheonehand,andthehairlinesandsmallness ofthelettersontheother."ProfessorWorrellreproducesfourpagesoftheChicagomanuscriptinfac-simile.
