Officials Celebrate Completion of Metro Orange Line Extensionto Chatsworth Ahead of Schedule, Under Budget
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), joined bycity, county and state officials, today celebrated the completion of the Metro OrangeLine Extension, a four-mile addition to the wildly popular dedicated busway that willenhance regional transit connections to and from the Western San Fernando Valley. The first transit project identified in Measure R to begin construction in 2009 hasbeen completed ahead of schedule by three and a half years, and its original $215.6million budget is currently forecasted to come in at approximately $154 million, $61million under budget. The final project savings will depend on the closeout of theproject, including the resolution of any final change orders with the contractor. Priorto the passage of Measure R, this transit project was scheduled to open in 2016. The brand new north/south busway extension from Canoga Park to Chatsworthwas built on a Metro-owned, former Union Pacific railroad right-of-way and adds fournew stations, three new or reconfigured parking lots, a new busway bridge overactive railroad tracks, two new busway bridges that cross waterways, new signalizedbusway/street crossings, street resurfacing improvements, new bicycle/pedestrianpath, and landscaping similar to the original Metro Orange Line.Now at 18 miles, the busway and its adjacent pedestrian/bikeway are thelongest of their kind in Los Angeles County.“Today we celebrate yet another Measure R transit milestone in Los Angeleswith the opening of the Metro Orange Line Extension to Chatsworth,” said Antonio
