DETAILED AUTO RELIABILITY
T
he charts on the following pagesgive you a model's complete reli-ability picture
for
both
its
usedversions (2005 through
2010)
and
the
new
one
currently
on
sale.
These detailed reliability Ratings
are
based
on our
2010 Annual
Car
ReliabilitySurvey, for which we received responses on1.3 million vehicles. The Annual Car Reliability Survey
is
sent
to subscribers of
CONSUMER REPORTS
and
ConsumerReports.org. Respondents
re-
ported
on
any serious problems they
had
with their vehicles in any of the trouble spotsincluded in the following charts, during theprevious 12 months. These were consideredserious because
of
cost, failure, safety,
or
downtime. Because high-mileage vehiclestend to have more problems than low-mile-age ones, problem rates
are
standardizedto minimize differences related
to
mileage. The 2010 models were generally less than sixmonths old at the time of the survey and hadbeen driven an average of about 3,000 miles.Models with insufficient data are noted witha column of asterisks (").

TROUBLE SPOTS
To assess a used
car in
more detail, look
at the
individual Ratings
for
each
of
the 17 trouble spots. They will pinpoint
a
model'sstrengths and weaknesses.Ratings are based on
the
percentage
of
surveyrespondents who reportedproblems
for
that troublespot, compared with
the
average
of
all vehicles
for
that
year.

necessarily unreli-able,

© are
not necessarily problem-free,
but
they had relativelyfew problems comparedwith other models.Because problem rates
in
some trouble spots are verylow, we do
not
assign a

3
percent.If a problem rate

it

USED CAR VERDICTS
To check the overall
reli-
ability
of
a used car, look
at
the Used Car Verdict. ThisRating shows whether themodel had more
or
fewerproblems overall than theaverage model
of
that year.

186CONSUMER REPORTS BUYING GUIDE 2012The verdict is calculated fromthe total number of problemsreported by subscribers in alltrouble spots. Our calculationsgive extra weight to problemswith major engine and trans-mission systems, the coolingsystem, and the drive systembecause they can be seriousand expensive to repair.
NEW CAR PREDICTIONS
To determine the New Car Pre-diction, we averaged a model'sUsed Car Verdict for the mostrecent three years, providedthe vehicle did not changesignificantly in that time andwasn't redesigned for 2010or
2011.
We have found thatseveral model years' data area better predictor than thesingle most recent model year. One or two years' data maybe used if the model was rede-signed in 2010 or 2009, or ifthere were insufficient datafor more years. Sometimes weinclude a prediction for a mod-el that is new or has been re-designed, provided its reliabilityhistory or the manufacturer'strack record has been consis-tently above average. "NA"means there were insufficientdata for a prediction.
