DIVISION I LEARFIELD SPORTS DIRECTORS CUP

Texas All-Sports
standings
Here are all-sports standings
for Division I conferences
other than the Big 12 that
include Texas colleges. These
standings are compiled separately from the U.S. Sports
Academy Directors Cup
all-sports standings and use
different formulas that are
determined by the conferences. Note: Conference USA
(Houston, Rice, SMU and
UTEP) and the Mountain West
Conference (TCU) do not
calculate all-sports standings.

The All-Sports Trophies are awarded for all
conference sports on a 12-point system for all
conference sports with values of 12, 11, 10, 9, 8,
7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point, based on place of finish. Points are awarded regardless of the number of teams competing in the championship.
Regular-season standings are used for sports
that have a conference tournament. Point totals from the mens and womens all-sports
standings are combined to determine the Commissioners Cup winner.

Dallas-area players Cody Gribble of Highland Park (front left) and Jordan Spieth of Jesuit (front center) helped Texas win the NCAA mens golf championship, a boost for the school as it finished sixth overall in the annual ranking of the nations athletic programs.

After two years out of the top 10, Texas takes sixth in ranking of sports programs

After back-to-back years

outside the top 10, Texas finished sixth in the 2011-12 Division I Learfield Sports Directors Cup.
Stanford, which won its
18thconsecutive title, was presented with the award Tuesday
at the Hilton Anatole as part of
the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics
conference.
Standings in the Directors
Cup reflect the breadth of success of an institutions athletic
department. Twelve of Texas
sports finished in the top 25 in
NCAA championships.
The Longhorns were the top

Big 12 school in the Cup standings, ending in the top 10 for the
ninth time in 11seasons.
Texas was aided by the efforts of freshman and Jesuit
grad Jordan Spieth, who helped
the Longhorns win the mens
NCAA golf championship for
the first time since 1972.
UT also leapfrogged Texas
A&M, which had finished higher in the standings over the last
two seasons.
A&M finished ninth in its final season in the Big 12. For the
first time in school history, the
Aggies have three straight top 10
finishes in the Cup standings.
We are poised to achieve
even more, and I think that
speaks to the dedication and
drive of everyone within our de-

partment to be the best while representing this premier institution, interim A&M athletic director John Thornton said in a
statement.
Oklahoma placed 14th, falling from No. 10 in 2010-11. With
all 19 of its teams reaching postseason play for the first time in
school history, Baylor matched
its best finish in the Directors
Cup, placing 25th.
Oklahoma State finished
42nd, TCU 52nd, and Texas
Tech 71st. SMU ended 100th,
third among Conference USA
programs, behind Central Florida and Tulsa. UT-Arlington
placed 143rd, second in the
Southland to Sam Houston
State. North Texas finished
205th.

Natosha Rogers (right) in

NCAA outdoor track
championships, finished
ninth in the
rankings, its
third straight
top-10 finish.

Volleyball and basketball are based on a combination of divisional and tournament finish;
soccer, softball, baseball and football are
based on regular-season finish; all others are
based on championship tournament finish.
Points are awarded based on the number of
schools sponsoring the sport. Institutions not
sponsoring a sport do not receive points in that
sport. Institutions tying for positions split the
combined points of their positions.

Standings
How the nations top 10 schools, the Big 12 and Texas other Division I schools finished in the 2011-12 Learfield Sports Directors Cup all-sports standings, presented by the National Association of Collegiate
Directors of Athletics.
Methodology: Division I standings were determined by points awarded in the schools 10 top-scoring mens sports and 10 top-scoring womens sports. Sports were determined by the final rank in a sport
according to formulas established by the NACDA. Points are based on the number of teams qualifying for each sports national tournament. Sports without a tournament are scored on a separate scale. A
minimum five points are awarded to a team that places 65th or better.
Coed points can replace a lower score in a mens or womens sport. Fencing and skiing were initially counted in the womens tally. Either could have moved to the mens tally if the women had scored in more
than their permissable number of sports. Rifle was counted for the gender that had a higher percentage of members on the team.
