Solemn Mass
on the Feast of
St Thomas the Apostle
2
St Ives Parish Church
Please stand as the Introit is sung.
Mihi autem nimis honorti sunt amci
tui, Deus:
nimis conforttus est principtus eorum.
Dmine probsti me, et cogno vsti
me : tu cognovsti sessionem meam,
et resurrectiem meam.
Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.
Sicut erat in principio,
et nunc, et semper,
et in scula sculorum. Amen.
To me Thy friends, O God, are made
exceedingly honourable; their principality
is exceedingly strengthened.
Lord, you have proved me and known
me; you know my sitting down,
and my rising up.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the
beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
The celebration of the Eucharist, or the Mass, has been described by
some theologians as the in-breaking of the future in our day-to-day
affairs. This future represents the promise of glory set before every
Christian soul; the fulfilment of our earthly pilgrimage; the
eschatological Marriage Supper of the Lamb; the beatific vision of
God, and the worship of heaven.

Thus, every time we participate to this celebration we come to
Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,
and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of
the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven (Hebrews 12:22-23). Here
we are given pledge of divine love and immortal life in the Body and
Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is in this spirit that the prayers, hymns, and musical setting for
this Mass have been chosen.

Mass setting: Missa brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo by Joseph Haydn

Front cover: Detail of The Doubting of Thomas by Carl H. Bloch ( Hope Gallery)

Common Worship: Festivals, material from which is included in this service, is
copyright The Archbishops Council 2008.

St Thomas Day 2012

We sing the opening hymn as the altar party enters the church,
(Words: Peter Abelard; translation: John M. Neale; Tune: O Quanta Qualia),

1. O what their joy and their glory must be,
Those endless Sabbaths the blessd ones see;
Crown for the valiant, to weary ones, rest;
God shall be all, and in all ever blessed.

2. What are the Monarch, His court, and His throne?
What are the peace and the joy that they own?
O that the blessed ones, who in it have share,
All that they feel could as fully declare!

3. Truly, Jerusalem name we that shore,
City of peace that brings joy evermore;
Wish and fulfillment are not severed there,
Nor do things prayed for come short of the prayer.

4. There, where no troubles distraction can bring,
We the sweet anthems of Zion shall sing;
While for Thy grace, Lord, their voices of praise
Thy blessd people eternally raise.

5. There dawns no Sabbath, no Sabbath is oer,
Those Sabbath keepers have one evermore;
One and unending is that triumph song
Which to the angels and us shall belong.

6. Now, in the meanwhile, with hearts raised on high,
We for that country must yearn and must sigh;
Seeking Jerusalem, dear native land,
Through our long exile on Babylons strand.

7. Low before Him with our praises we fall,
Of Whom, and in Whom, and through Whom are all;
Of Whom, the Father; and in Whom, the Son,
Through Whom, the Spirit, with Them ever One.

INTRODUCTION AND PENITENTIAL RITE
The celebrant introduces the celebration,

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

A-men.

The Lord be with you.

And al-so with you.

The deacon invites the people to confess their sins.
Silence is kept, then we say,

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you
and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
who died for us, forgive us all that is past
and grant that we may serve you
in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God,
who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in life eternal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

The choir then sings the Kyrie and Gloria.
Krie elison;
Christ elison;
Krie elison
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

LITURGY OF THE WORD
All sit for the readings.

A reading from the Prophet Habakkuk,

I will stand at my watch-post,
and station myself on the rampart;
I will keep watch to see what he will say to me,
and what he will answer concerning my complaint.
Then the Lord answered me and said:
Write the vision;
make it plain on tablets,
so that a runner may read it.
For there is still a vision for the appointed time;
it speaks of the end, and does not lie.
If it seems to tarry, wait for it;
it will surely come, it will not delay.
Look at the proud!
Their spirit is not right in them,
but the righteous live by their faith. (Habakkuk 2:1-4)

This is the word of the Lord.
All:Thanks be to God.

A reading from the Letter of St Paul to the Ephesians,

Brothers and sisters, you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are
citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built
upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus
himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together
and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built
together spiritually into a dwelling-place for God. (Ephesians 2:19-22)

This is the word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.

After this, we stand to sing the Gradual hymn
(Words: Charles Wesley; tune: Blaenwern),
1. Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heaven to earth come down;
Fix in us thy humble dwelling;
All thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
Pure unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation;
Enter every trembling heart.
2. Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit,
Into every troubled breast!
Let us all in Thee inherit;
Let us find that second rest.
Take away our bent to sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its Beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.

St Thomas Day 2012

The Gospel acclamation follows,

A-lle-lu-ia! A-lle-lu-ia! A-lle-lu-ia!

A versicle is sung and the Alleluia is repeated.

We turn to face the book of the Gospels,

The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.

Hear the gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
All: Glory to you, O Lord.

A
t that time, Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not
with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have
seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his
hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not
believe.
A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was
with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among
them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your
finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side.
Do not doubt but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God!
Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed
are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. (John 20:24-29)

This is the gospel of the Lord.
All: Praise to you, O Christ.

After this, all sit for the homily delivered by Dr Ian Boxall (New Testament tutor at
St Stephens House, Oxford).

After this, silence is kept.

3. Come, Almighty to deliver,
Let us all Thy life receive;
Suddenly return and never,
Never more Thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
Pray and praise Thee without ceasing,
Glory in Thy perfect love.
4. Finish, then, Thy new creation;
Pure and spotless let us be.
Let us see Thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee;
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

St Ives Parish Church
We stand as the celebrant then introduces the Creed.

We believe in one God, the Father,
the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit
and the Virgin Mary and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The celebrant introduces the Prayer of the Faithful.
At the end of each petition, the deacon says Lord in your mercy and all respond
Hear our prayer. At the end, we say

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

The priest concludes the prayers and all respond Amen.

St Thomas Day 2012
LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT
The celebrant introduces the Peace

The peace of the Lord be always with you.
All: And also with you.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

We are all invited to share a sign of peace as the offertory antiphon is sung.
As the altar is being prepared, we sing the Offerory hymn
(Words: Bernard of Morlaix; translation: John M. Neale; tune: Ewing),

1. Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey blest,
Beneath thy contemplation sink heart and voice oppressed.
I know not, O I know not, what joys await us there,
What radiancy of glory, what bliss beyond compare.

2. They stand, those halls of Zion, all jubilant with song,
And bright with many an angel, and all the martyr throng;
The Prince is ever in them, the daylight is serene.
The pastures of the blessd are decked in glorious sheen.

3. There is the throne of David, and there, from care released,
The shout of them that triumph, the song of them that feast;
And they, who with their Leader, have conquered in the fight,
Forever and forever are clad in robes of white.

4. O one, O only mansion! O paradise of joy!
Where tears are ever banished, and smiles have no alloy;
The cross is all thy splendor, the Crucified thy praise,
His laud and benediction thy ransomed people raise.

5. Jerusalem, the only, that lookst from heaven below,
In thee is all my glory, in me is all my woe!
And though my body may not, my spirit seeks thee fain,
Till flesh and earth return me to earth and flesh again.

6. Jerusalem, exulting on that securest shore,
I hope thee, wish thee, sing thee, and love thee evermore!
I ask not for my merit: I seek not to deny
My merit is destruction, a child of wrath am I.
In omnem terram exvit sonus
erum:
et in fines orbis terrae verba erum.
Their voice goes out through all the
earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
10
St Ives Parish Church
7. But yet with faith I venture and hope upon the way,
For those perennial guerdons I labor night and day.
The best and dearest Father Who made me, and Who saved,
Bore with me in defilement, and from defilement laved.

8. When in His strength I struggle, for very joy I leap;
When in my sin I totter, I weep, or try to weep:
And grace, sweet grace celestial, shall all its love display,
And Davids royal fountain purge every stain away.

9. Strive, man, to win that glory; toil, man, to gain that light;
Send hope before to grasp it, till hope be lost in sight.
Exult, O dust and ashes, the Lord shall be thy part:
His only, His forever thou shalt be, and thou art.

10. O sweet and blessd country, the home of Gods elect!
O sweet and blessd country, that eager hearts expect!
Jesus, in mercy bring us to that dear land of rest,
Who art, with God the Father, and Spirit, ever blessed.

After the altar has been prepared, the celebrant invites the faithful to prayer

Pray, my brothers and sisters, that our sacrifice
may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.
All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands,
for the praise and glory of his name,
for our good and the good of all his Church.

The priest sings a prayer over the gifts and all respond

A-men.

11
St Thomas Day 2012
The Eucharistic Prayer is then introduced

The Lord be with you.

And al-so with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

At the end of the Preface the choir sings Sanctus & Benedictus,
All kneel as the celebrant continues the Eucharistic Prayer.
After the consecration we sing,

Great is the mystery of faith:
All: Christ has died. Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

At the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, all respond,

A-men.
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus
Dminus Deus Sbaoth.
Pleni sunt cli et terra
glria tua.
Hosnna in exclsis.

Benedictus qui venit
in nomine Domini.
Hosnna in exclsis.
Holy, Holy, Holy
Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth
are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

COMMUNION RITE
All stand as the celebrant introduces the Lords Prayer,

Jesus taught us to call God our Father, and so we have the courage to say,
All: Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

After this, the choir sings the Agnus Dei,

Showing the Host to those present, the celebrant says,

This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
All: Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

Agnus Dei,
qui tollis peccta mundi,
miserre nobis.
Lamb of God,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
Agnus Dei,
qui tollis peccta mundi,
miserre nobis.
Lamb of God,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us.
Agnus Dei,
qui tollis peccta mundi,
dona nobis pacem.
Lamb of God,
you take away the sins of the world,
grant us peace.
13
St Thomas Day 2012
We are invited to approach the altar rail to receive Holy Communion as the Communion
antiphon in sung,
As Holy Communion is being shared we sing the following hymns,
O Godhead hid, devoutly I adore Thee
(Words: St. Thomas Aquinas; translation: Edward Casswall; tune: Aquinas)

1. O Godhead hid, devoutly I adore Thee,
Who truly art within the forms before me;
To Thee my heart I bow with bended knee,
As failing quite in contemplating Thee.

2. Sight, touch, and taste in Thee are each deceived;
The ear alone most safely is believed:
I believe all the Son of God has spoken,
Than Truth's own word there is no truer token.

3. God only on the Cross lay hid from view;
But here lies hid at once the Manhood too;
And I, in both professing my belief,
Make the same prayer as the repentant thief.

4. Thy wounds, as Thomas saw, I do not see;
Yet Thee confess my Lord and God to be:
Make me believe Thee ever more and more;
In Thee my hope, in Thee my love to store.

5. O thou Memorial of our Lord's own dying!
O Bread that living art and vivifying!
Make ever Thou my soul on Thee to live;
Ever a taste of Heavenly sweetness give.

6. O loving Pelican! O Jesu, Lord!
Unclean I am, but cleanse me in Thy Blood;
Of which a single drop, for sinners spilt,
Is ransom for a world's entire guilt.

7. Jesu! Whom for the present veil'd I see,
What I so thirst for, O vouchsafe to me:
That I may see Thy countenance unfolding,
And may be blest Thy glory in beholding. Amen.

Mitte manum tuam,
et cognosce loca clavrum:
et noli esse incrdulus sed fidelis.
Reach out your hand,
and feel the place of the nails;
and be not faithless but believing.
14
St Ives Parish Church
And O Bread of Heaven, beneath this veil,
(Words: St. Alphonsus deLiguori; tune: Tynemouth/St. Catherine)
After this, we stand. The celebrant sings the Post-Communion prayer, and we all re-
spond,

A-men.

Then we say together,

Almighty God,
we thank you for feeding us
with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ.
Through him we offer you our souls and bodies
to be a living sacrifice.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

Members of the congregation are invited to come forward to the altar rail to receive an
individual blessing from the celebrant.
Fr Diego will also leave flowers in front of the image of Our Lady of Walsingham in
thanksgiving for Our Ladys continual help in his vocation.
1. O Bread of Heaven, beneath this veil
Thou dost my very God conceal:
My Jesus, dearest treasure, hail!
I love Thee and, adoring, kneel;
Each loving soul by Thee is fed
With Thine own Self in form of Bread.

2. O food of life, Thou Who dost give
The pledge of immortality;
I live, no 'tis not I that live;
God gives me life, God lives in me:
He feeds my soul, He guides my ways,
And every grief with joy repays.

3. O Bond of love that dost unite
The servant to his living Lord;
Could I dare live and not requite
Such love - then death were meet reward:
I cannot live unless to prove
Some love for such unmeasured love.
4. O Mighty Fire, Thou that dost burn
To kindle every mind and heart!
For Thee my frozen soul doth yearn;
Come, Lord of love, Thy warmth impart;
If thus to speak too bold appear,
Tis love like Thine has banished fear.

5. Beloved Lord, in Heaven above
There, Jesus, Thou awaitest me,
To gaze on Thee with endless love;
Yes, thus I hope, thus shall it be:
For how can He deny me Heaven,
Who here on earth Himself hath given?
15
St Thomas Day 2012
The choir sings the anthem Zadok the Priest.
(George F. Handel; words: cf. King James Bible, 1Kings 1:38-40)

After this, we stand for the final blessing and the last hymn,

God, who has prepared for you a city with eternal foundations,
bring you, with Ss Thomas, Ia,
John the Evangelist, the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints,
to the eternal and triumphant joy of that city;
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always.
All: Amen.

The Mass is ended. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
All: In the name of Christ, Amen.

Joy to thee, Queen! within thine ancient dowry (Tune: Pilgrims)

Joy to thee, Queen! within thine ancient dowry;
Joy to thee, Queen! for once again thy fame
Is noised abroad, and spoken of in England,
And thy lost children, call upon thy name.

Lady of Walsingham! Be as thou hast been;
Englands protectress, our Mother and our Queen!

In ages past, thy palmer-children sought thee
From near and far, a faith- enlightened throng,
Bringing their gems, and gold and silver love-gifts,
Where tapers gleamed, where all was prayer and song.

Countless the signs and wonders that men told there,
For not in vain did any pilgrim kneel
Before thy Shrine to seek thy intercession,
But thou didst bend to listen and to heal.

The Martyrs blood, like heavenly seed is scattered;
The harvest now is ripe for us to reap;
The Faith dishonoured now is held in honour;
O help thine own this precious gift to keep.

Unto thy Son, unto our sweet Redeemer:
Source of our hope, our life, our joy: once more
We bring this love and loyalty of England,
And in his Sacrament we Him adore
