 Accelerating Growth through Strategic Alliances
July 4, 2012Dear ASAP Colleagues,On Thursday, June 21
st
I spoke to a room full of participants interested in Strategy andStrategic Alliances. I thank the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals (ASAP) forthis opportunity. As per Patrik Stre
bel’s
request, I am sharing highlights of my presentation
Accelerating Growth through Strategic Alliances
through this write-up.
 A definition of Strategic Alliance
Strategic Alliance is a combination of core competencies brought together by multipleorganizations where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.Simply put, when someone else can perform a certain aspect (skill set, competency) of your business better, cheaper or faster than you can, they are your competitor, anacquisition candidate, or strategic alliance partner.
Why the need to Accelerate Growth?
Status quo is no longer an option
 –
grow, or you will be run over by competition fromworld-
over in today’s flat world.
Globalization is forcing businesses to increase the speed with which they respond andcapitalize on opportunities.
The
Cheese is Moving Again…

In the good book “
Who Moved My Cheese?
” the c
ore message was: change isinevitable, accept it
 –
in a way, change with the change! D
on’t waste your resources
wondering about it. Put your heads down and keep running around the maze chasingafter the cheese. This may have been appropriate for the last decade when the needwas to conserve resources and focus efforts.Globalization, which was hyped over the last couple of decades, has become
today’sreality. Competing in today’s dyn
amic global environment requires outside-the-mazethinking.
A recent book “
I Moved Your Cheese!
” promotes this through its core message: don’t
accept change blindly. Try to understand it; challenge the assumption; question whyyou are in the maze in the first place
 –
break out
As the book explains, "You see, the problem is not that the mouse is in the maze, butthat the maze is in the mouse."

 Accelerating Growth through Strategic Alliances
How does a maze figure into Strategic Alliances?
Look closely, our maze is the industrial age business model. Don't get me wrong
 –
thisis a powerful and great way to model an enterprise. However, the operationalizing of this model must change. Our mind set of doing everything or controlling everythingmust change to collaborating.Going back to my definition of Strategic Alliances, partnering with entities who canperform portion(s) of your operation better, cheaper or faster than you can, will giveyou a competitive edge. This requires breaking out of the traditional thinking (maze)and expanding the scope of possibilities through strategic arrangements.
What about Strategy?
Strategy is an overly used and often misused term. People tend to throw strategy infront of regular words to make it sound important or urgent: strategic initiatives, strategic programs and even strategic thinking.Strategy, simply put, is all about making choices based on deep research, holisticassessment and educated prediction -- past, current and present. It is laughable when organization talk about strategy when in reality they are facing acrisis situation and the need of the day is action. It is comparable to studying theemergency landing card when the plane is losing altitude and going down. Trust me,your mental faculty is not in the mode of studying or learning in a crisis situation.I hope you find these reflections of value. Feel free to contact me if you are interested instrategy related discussions or would like me to speak at any of your events. I am taking
the liberty of including a “power” strategy workshop
option for your consideration.Once again, my thanks to the ASAP leadership for the opportunity to share some of myexperiences at the June event held at Gleneagles Country Club.Sincerely,*Raj G. AsavaCEO
