Rey-nolds[57]ABSTRACTAnapparatusandmethodformeasuringelectricalparam-etersofamediumsuchaselectricalconductivityanddielectricconstantbetweenapairofelectrodesaredis-closed.Themediumcanbealiquid,gas,powder,etc.,andtheelectrodescanbecoaxialmetalliccircularcylinders.Tocomputeelectricalconductivity,thedeviceisimmersedinthemediumtoanimmersiondepthandtheconductanceacrosstheelectrodesisdetermined.Themeasurementisrepeatedatatleastoneadditionalimmersiondepth.Byobtainingadifferentialconductancemeasurementwithrespecttotheimmersiondepth,theeffectsoffringecon-ductancesareeliminatedfromthemeasurement.Thedevicecanalsobeusedtodeterminedielectricconstantofthematerialbyobtainingadifferentialcapacitancemeasure-mentwithrespecttoimmersiondepth.Thedeviceneednotbecalibratedbyperformingresistancemeasurementsinaknownstandardsolution.Also,becausetheelectrodescanbepurelymetallicandincludenodielectricmaterial,thedevicecanbeusedtoperformmeasurementsinhighlycorrosivemediawhosecompositionswouldbealtereduponcontactwithdielectricmaterials.31Claims,5DrawingSheets
