. Itestablishes procedures, requirements, recording and medical standards for medical examinationsgiven by the Air Force. It prescribes procedures and references the authority for retiring,discharging, or retaining members who, because of physical disability, are unfit to perform theirduties. This instruction applies to all applicants for military service and scholarship programs.This publication does not apply to Air Force Civilian Employees or applicants to the civilianworkforce. This publication applies to Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) Units andIndividual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA). This publication applies to the Air Force Pre-trainedIndividual Manpower (PIM). This publication applies to the Air National Guard (ANG).This instruction requires the collection and maintenance of information protected by the PrivacyAct of 1974 and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).Authority to collect and maintain records prescribed in this AFI are outlined in Title 10, UnitedStates Code, Section 8013. SUMMARY OF CHANGES

This publication is updated to reflect changes in guidance and procedures in the processing of physical examinations and the application of medical standards. The major changes include theclarification of physical examination processing, removal of baseline electrocardiogramrequirement for non aircrew at age 35; clarification of return to active duty program medicalrequirements; updated mobility status and deployment criteria; changed all references of UASpilot to Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) pilot; clarified terms of validity for physicalexaminations; revised hyperlipidemia and allergic rhinitis for aircrew; added acupuncture policy;clarified general conditions that interfere with military service; revised vision and refractive errortable 6.1; clarified procedures to be taken when a member has a medical defect which precludes

continued duty in a member’s AFSC, and clarified the requirement for FCIIU applicants to go

through MFS for neuropsych testing. Clarifies Exercise Tolerance Testing and retentionstandards for the heart and vascular system. Exempts ANG Warfighters from the requirement toobtain permission to proceed for Refractive Surgery from the Warfighter Program Manager.Deletes reference to United States Air Force Academy Form 1042.
