Amazing Minds
Learning made fun! Come explore this
exciting after school program open to
all frstthird graders who love to learn.
Amazing Minds offers a variety of inter-
active topics that change each session and
will expand your childs knowledge of the
world while reinforcing their academic
skills. Your child may become a junior ge-
ologist and explore the world of rocks and
minerals, investigate owl pellets, fnd out
how to make raisins bounce through scien-
tifc experiments, learn about famous land-
marks, discover rare Australian animals,
excavate hidden treasures from an ancient
Egyptian tomb or sample ethnic cuisine
from China or Italy. Come join all the fun
exploration in this cant-miss enrichment
program. All materials are included. Each
session a different country is explored,
thus exposing your child to geography as
well as different languages and cultures.

Chess Wizards
Chess Wizards is now offering advanced chess classes at Win-
netka Community House! If you feel your child needs more of a
challenge, then this class will be the perfect way to expand their
knowledge of chess. Children will learn advanced strategies and
techniques, and classes will focus on preparation for tournaments
in the wider chess world. Our class will cover openings, end-
games, grandmaster games, and competitive psychology. Please
note that this class is highly advanced and requires a good base
knowledge of chess theory.

are just a few of the social graces you will learn and keep in your
portfolio for life. In addition, personal qualities such as telephone
courtesies, acts of kindness, parties, invitations, the importance
of RSVP and the importance of writing a thank you note will be
included. Learn the rules of table manners including the proper
way to set the table, which fork to use and what to do if you drop
it on the foor. Ms. Manners requests you be on time and dress in
your best: gentleman shirt, tie and sport coat; young women

Join an Extraordinary Kids class and en-
rich your childs kindergarten year with
an educational adventure. Each session

cial studies, geography and art. Kids learn
about the human body, monsters, Africa,
dinosaurs and more. Extraordinary Kids
emphasizes fun and creativity, challenges
creative minds, enhances learning through

ders. We will do it all while learning Span-
ish! From the creators of Camp Amigos,
Fun with Amigos uses a highly controlled
vocabulary introduced in conjunction
with fun theme days. All instructors are
experienced in early childhood and at least
one instructor is a native speaker.

to implement the Amigos Programs curric-
ulum. Please do not register if your child

Sunshine Arts and Crafts
Students begin by creating their own
tie-dye shirts which are used as painting
smocks for the remainder of the program.
Shirts are provided. Kids will then be ex-
posed to pottery painting using acrylics
and will learn a variety of techniques. Dif-
ferent concepts will be shown as students
investigate aspects of color, brush strokes,
sponging, dry-brushing, texturing and
shading. All fnished pieces will be glazed
and glitter sparkled (if desired) and taken
home immediately. In the other sessions
the kids will create recycled art projects
and a green ceramic bowl, plate, mug or
tile which will be fred and used at home.

for the preschool and kindergarten child
including creative explorations through
stories, art and play. The class begins

Build robotics and use them as controllers
for your Scratch video animation projects!
You and a partner will use LEGO Robotics
kits to build a controller for your Scratch

puter to control your games.

Kids Science Labs has developed innova-
tive hands-on classes for kids using our

Brandon Seyferth has been teaching guitar at the North Shore School for the Arts in Glencoe for seven years. He is a critically acclaimed
songwriter and composer who is accomplished on the guitar, voice, blues piano and drums. Seyferth has performed, composed and re-
corded with the likes of Jackson Browne, Victor Delarenzo (Violent Femmes), Jay Bennett (Wilco), Eric McFadden (P-Funk, Stockholm
Syndrome), and Clyde Stubblefeld (James Brown). His lengthy study and experience as a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist make him
an excellent results-based instructor. His love for music and learning translates into fun and rewarding lessons.
Mary Fisher has been working in the early childhood profession for over 20 years. She has been teaching at the Community House for
over 10 years.
Elyse Ferdinand holds a degree from Northern Illinois in Early Childhood Education. She has over 18 years of preschool
teaching experience.

ers will learn how to play chess in a fun

3Point Athletics will be holding its annual
Hoops Camp during your schools holiday
break. The camp will focus on drills that
improve skill sets of individual players in

the skills learned each day in camp, while
the ultimate goal will be daily full-court
game situation scrimmages that will show-

Illinois Baseball Academy employs some of

Majors introductory clinic is a fun-flled

is to help young players gain confdence,
improve coordination and appreciate the

Midwest Fencing Academy
Fencing demands a blend of tactical and
strategic thought and a physical execution
of those decisions. This has led many to
describe the sport as physical chess.
Fencing also teaches balance and discipline
and even more than this, its fun! Fencing is
for those new to fencing or those who would
like to work on the basic skills of fencing.
This class will cover basic fencing rules,
fencing etiquette, basic footwork, attacks,

Lil Pigskins is a national child development program that helps
kids discover the game of football. This program is designed
for children to learn about football, to have fun playing games
and to increase their overall health. Our dynamic curriculum

ability, leadership, confdence and knowledge of the game.

FUNdamental Soccer is a new and exciting soccer program for children starting out or
already involved in soccer. This program has been created to help instill the love of the
game in a professional setting surrounded by caring and qualifed coaches. On and off the
feld, the program will provide a positive learning environment with the tools to create a
memorable experience for everyone involved. The program has been developed to support
active parent participation through the use of the Backyard Activity Booklet. A $35 soccer
kit fee is required at the frst class for frst time participants. The soccer kit includes a Dino
uniform (shirt, shorts, socks) and Dino/Deana soccer ball.

Dinomites uses the two characters of

impact on youth by providing them a top notch training in the sport of basketball as well
as teaching them how to live a healthy lifestyle off the court as well as teaching them how

F I RST, SECOND AND THI RD GRADE
YOUTH BASKETBALL HOUSE LEAGUE
If you have a frst through third grade boy or girl interested in playing basketball against other area players without the hassle of
traveling to a different location for every game, this program is for them. Participants will learn fundamental skills through weekly
practice and games. Adult volunteers coach all teams. First grade games will have youth size basketballs and eight foot basketball rims.
Second grade will have youth size basketballs and nine foot basketball rims. Third grade games will have adult size basketballs, 10 foot
basketball rims and score will be kept. All games will have staff referees and timekeepers. All participants will receive a team t-shirt
and commemorative basketball.
1. Teams will be established according to school (Crow Island, Greeley, Hubbard Woods, Sacred Heart, Faith Hope, North Shore
Country Day and more), there will be no evaluation. When flling out your registration form please remember to insert your child/
childrens school. Otherwise placement on a particular school team cannot be guaranteed. If there are more than 10 children from a
school, multiple teams will be formed. If there too few children from any one school, children will be placed on a team according to
village of residence. Due to the number of children in this program requests will not be taken.
2. There will be a one hour practice during the week. Time, assigned at a later date, will be sometime between Monday and Friday,
5:008:00 p.m. There will be two weeks of practice before the frst game.
3. Games will be held on Saturdays. Time, assigned at a later date, will be sometime between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Games will begin
after two weeks of practice.

Traditional Karate is a martial art which emphasizes the principles and applications of weaponless self-defense. Our Karate Program
follows a systemized belt ranking for all participants. There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before frst-degree black belt (shodan). A new student
is assigned the white belt rank (eleventh kyu). One must fulfll certain requirements under normal practice conditions and in a test

Frank Chrzanowski, chief instructor, developed the Traditional Karate Program for Winnetka Community House in 1989. He has trained
in Karate since 1975 and has attained the rank of fourth degree black belt in the Japan Karate Association. He has been featured in articles
in the Chicago Tribune, the Sun Times and the Pioneer Press, and has appeared on local and national television programs.
Ron Stein has trained in karate since 1981 and is a third degree black belt in the Japan Karate Association. His karate experience extends
to Europe and Japan, where he lived for four years, training under many instructors and studying various Japanese martial arts. His
karate teaching experience includes The University of Chicago, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the United States
Marine Corps in Tokyo. He has been with Winnetka Community House Karate Program since 1994.

Taekwondo, one of the newest Olympic sports, is a 2000-year-old martial art, offering a variety of benefts for people of all ages and
physical abilities. Students have the opportunity to improve concentration and self-esteem, achieve lifelong physical ftness and learn
self-defense skills. Classes are taught under the direction of G.Master Ki Hong Kim* (Eighth Dan World Taekwondo Federation.) A $45

Greg Schultz received his BFA from Wash-
ington University in St. Louis in 1990. He
has studied at the graduate level at SAIC.
Greg has been studying ceramics at Lill-
street Art Center since 2002 and has also
been a studio member there since 2009.
Currently, he sells his work online and at
his own studio, Schultz Studio Arts.
Gabriella Verbovszky holds a BFA from
the Cleveland Institute of Art and MFA
from the New York State College of Ce-
ramics at Alfred University. Gabriella is
currently studying nutrition at the Insti-
tute of Integrative Nutrition (NYC). She
is a KUSHI Institute Certifed Macrobi-
otic Instructor who has focused attention
on the dietary needs of both woman and
children after her mother became ill. Prior
to the change in diet, Gabriella was a som-
melier and received her training in Europe
acquiring the highest form of certifcation
including WSET-Wine and Spirit Educa-
tions Advisor of Wine Certifcate.

Gwendolyn Britt has been teaching dance at the Winnetka Community House since 1994. She is a graduate of the Indiana University
School of Music with a concentration in Ballet and Music. Gwendolyn danced professionally in Ruth Pages Chicago Production of
The Nutcracker, for the Lynda Martha Dance Company and with Concert Dance Company of Boston. In Boston, she was Associate
Director of the Lexington School of Ballet, and she is a certifed Cecchetti Council of America teacher.
Brittany Burns comes to Winnetka Community House with over 20 years of experience. She has trained in jazz, tap, lyrical, hip hop,
modern, and ballet at various studios around the Chicagoland area such as Visceral, Joel Hall, and Gus Giordano. After performing
around the city with Equilibrium Dance Chicago for four years, Brittany discovered that her true passion was teaching dance to all
ages. She loves nothing more than spreading the joy of dance in a fun, educational and supportive environment. Brittany also teaches
at The Mount Prospect Center for Tap and Jazz and the Arlington Heights Park District dance programs. She is very excited to begin
sharing her love and knowledge of the arts.
Patty Marsden has over 25 years of teaching experience. She is a certifed dance instructor through the Chicago National Association
of Dance Masters and the American Academy of Ballet. As a professional representative for the National Dance Week Organization,
she is committed to encourage the growth and development of Dance in America. Patty has functioned as Artistic Director for several
suburban dance programs, and as Director and choreographer for Impulse Dance Ensemble. She was the dance director at St. Viator
High School and taught Master classes for several other high schools. Patty has taught at several private studios and park districts in
the Northwest suburbs and on the North Shore.
Meghann Mueller received both a BFA in Dance and a BA in History from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. She began
her early dance training at the Evanston School of Ballet under Kerry Hubata and Laura Wade. During summers, Meghann studied at the
Joffrey Ballet and on scholarship at the Milwaukee Ballet. While at TCU, she had the opportunity to perform works by TCU faculty
members, as well as several guest artists including Elizabeth Johnson, Dana Nicolay, and TCU Choreographer in Residence Fernando
Bujones. In the spring of 2006, Meghanns work, Narrow Anguish, was performed at the American College Dance Festival in the
adjudicated concert. In 2007, Meghann formed Project606 Dance with former classmate Maureen Caspers. The company has performed
throughout Chicago including at the revered Hamlin Park Fieldhouse and at the Atheneum Theater as a part of Dance Chicago.
E. Marc Nevins is Winnetka native, currently serves as Artistic Director of Ballet Entre Nous, a company he founded in 1985. He
has choreographed and staged over 100 works for the company including an annual production of The Nutcracker! at the Winnetka
Community House. His work has been seen all over Chicago. has appeared with such companies as American Ballet Theatre, the
Joffrey Ballet, Ballet West and locally,Evanston Concert Ballet, Oak Park Ballet, Masi Ballet Chicago and Lake Shore Dance Theatre.
Mr. Nevins has taught ballet extensively throughout the Chicagoland area for nearly 30 years and has been teaching at the Winnetka
Community House since 1987.

Yoga teaches teenagers how to navigate through the many
social and academic demands and is a place of calm in the storm.
Yoga increases strength and fexibility; a workout in itself or a
perfect complement to athletics. Yoga builds confdence, self-
esteem and a healthy awareness of ones body in a noncompeti-
tive environment. It is proven that yoga calms the mind and
the nervous system through breath and moving meditation. In
addition, yoga is sometimes just plain fun, downright silly, and

Puppy Class is designed to provide a positive environment for
socialization of puppies to a wide variety of people as well as to
each other. Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the
incidence of both human-directed aggression and dog-dog aggression,
as well as anxiety and fear based behavior problems. Additional
topics will be discussed such as addressing the common puppy issues
of house training, mouthing, leadership and preventing behavior
problems. Puppies will also learn sit and begin recall training (coming
when called). This class is appropriate for puppies ages 24 months
old. Dogs must have received at least two rounds of vaccinations
prior to attending. If your dog has not yet received the second round,
please plan to attend class without your pGruppy until the second
round of vaccination has been administered.
Obedience 101 teaches the basics of obedience: sit, down, stand,
recall (coming when called), stay, and heeleverything your
companion dog needs to know! Both verbal commands and hand
signals will be used. Dogs of any age may take this class. Positive
reinforcement techniques will be used, so please bring food rewards
or a small toy with you to class.
Obedience 102 is focused on honing the skills of Obedience 101.
Additional levels of diffculty and distractions will be added. Dogs
of any age may enroll provided they have a basic knowledge of basic
obedience commands: sit, down, recall (coming when called), stay,
and heel.
Canine Good Citizen (CGC) class covers the 10 aspects of the
AKC CGC test, the only AKC certifcate available to all dogspure-
and mix-breed. The CGC program is designed to encourage dog
owners to train their dogs to be Canine Good Citizens and includes
the following: accepting a friendly stranger; walking on a loose lead;
sitting politely for petting; allowing basic grooming procedures;
walking through a crowd; sitting and lying down on command
and staying in place; coming when called; reacting appropriately to
another dog; reacting appropriately to distractions; calmly enduring
supervised separation from the owner. The CGC test is administered
on the last night of class. Children training dogs must be at least 12
years old. Dogs must wear a fat buckle collar for the test, no training
collars, head halters or body harnesses are permitted during the test.
Rally is a fun spin on traditional obedience for both the dog and
the handler. Rally is a sport in which ALL dogs are encouraged
to participate. Purebred or mixed breed, every dog can learn the
fundamentals for Rally. Dogs must have strong heeling skills to
take this course. In rally an enthusiastic attitude and wagging tail
are as important as precision. In fact, handlers are not only allowed
to, but encouraged to positively reinforce their dogs during the
competition with verbal praise, petting, and even food rewards!
Dogs and handlers should both appear to be enjoying the work and
each others company.
Creative Paws, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Ashlee Trotter,
BS, CPDT-KA, and provides group classes and private lessons
for dog obedience training and behavior problems. She has been
recognized for several years as a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator
by the American Kennel Club and a Certifed Pet Dog Trainer
(CPDT-KA) by the Certifcation Council for Pet Dog Trainers.
Ashlee and her staff use positive reinforcement training methods
to improve the relationship between dog and handler by providing
an effective means of communication and understanding as the

individuals seeking affordable and safe housing;
Fair Housing, which includes housing discrimination

information and referral, community education and

which helps homeowners who may be victims of unfair
lending practices; and Affordable Housing Advocacy,

Where Arts, Learning and Community Come Together!
Founded in 1924, the North Shore Art League is a
non-proft organization offering art classes for adults and
children. As the only art center located in Winnetka, the
NSAL not only offers art education, but also lectures,
workshops, feld trips and an ongoing series of gallery
shows to the entire North Shore community.
Located on the second foor of the Community House,
classes are held in an historic, professional art studio
featuring skylights and a large stone freplace as well as a
well-equipped print room and ceramics facility. Classes in
drawing, painting (oil, acrylic, and watercolor), ceramics,
pastels, etching, printmaking, fgure study, and more
are taught by a distinguished facultyoffering a unique,
creative experience.
League members may exhibit at the annual Members Show
and throughout the year in NSAL gallery space within

A nationally accredited preschool for children ages 35,

The mission of the Winnetka Youth Organization (the
YO) is to foster individual development in junior high
and high school youth on the North Shore by providing
adult-to -youth mentoring, prevention services, and
opportunities for leadership, citizenship, and education
within a safe, informal environment. We offer monthly
concerts and open mic nights as well as a variety of
other youth driven activities such as craft, movie, and

Registration received through the mail, fax, or in person will be processed
by 5:00 p.m. the next business day. The best way to ensure that your
registration is processed immediately is by using our online registration at

Early registration: Members are eligible to register for all classes one week
prior to the start of seasonal registration. Early registration can be done
via the web at winnetkacommunityhouse.org, fax or in person at Winnetka
Community House. Please note: early registration does not guarantee a

Who is eligible for benefts? All family members in your household are
eligible for membership benefts. When registering for membership, just list
your family members, and they will be included for the program registra-
tion benefts automatically when registering for classes.
Membership renewal: Members receive a notice about one month prior
to the expiration, so the membership can be renewed for the next year.
Refunds for memberships will not be available.

make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed.
Winnetka Community House is not responsible for the supervision
of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established
program times.

responsible for payment of medical expenses. Due to the difficulty and high cost of obtaining liability insurance, the agency providing liability coverage for Winnetka Community House requires the execution of
