The Characteristics of Godliness
We have defined Godliness as the heart attitude of one determinedto closely resemble God in his attitude, actions, and thoughts. Therefore, one who is Godly will outwardly manifest certaincharacteristics. This list is by no means exhaustive nor is in aspecific order.First, the Godly individual demonstrates a sensitivity to sin. David
stated in Psalm 32:6 “
For this shall every one that is godly prayunto thee in
a time when thou mayest be found.” This is a
fter hehas confessed his sin and experienced the joy of a burden beinglifted. Those who are Godly will have this same mindset. Paulcommended the Corinthians for their Godly sorrow which wasevidenced by confessing and forsaking sin (2 Corinthians 7:9-11).Secondly, the Godly individual develops a love for the Word of God. Psalm 1 describes the Godly man who stays away from sin.
Verse 4 states, “The ungodly are not so.” Therefore, we can
logically conclude that the Godly ones are described earlier.
[the Godly individual] delight is in the law of the LORD; and in
his law doth he meditate day and night” (Psalm 1:2).
Thirdly, the Godly individual endures worldly opposition. 2
Timothy 3:12 phrases it this way, “
Yea, and all that will live godlyin Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution
.” The Godly person is no
friend of the world.Do these three elements characterize your life?Pastor Q
