WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
JORDAN COVE IS A SMALL ESTU-ARY IN LONG ISLAND SOUND FEDBY JORDAN BROOK. THE COVE HASIMPAIRED WATER QUALITY BASED ONEXCESS BACTERIA. LONG ISLAND SOUNDSUFFERS FROM HYPOXIA RELATED TOEXCESS NITROGEN.
The key project goalwas to measure the effectiveness ofurban stormwater best managementpractices in reducing runoff andprotecting water quality.
JORDAN COVE URBAN WATERSHED PROJECT
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES WERE TO:
1. Reduce sediment, bacteria, nitrogen, phosphorus, and stormwater runoffquantity during and after construction.2. Demonstrate residential BestManagement Practices (BMPs).3. Evaluate selected BMPs (e.g. driveways, lawn management).
Runoff from urban areas is a major cause ofwater pollution throughout the United States.Pollutants can include bacteria, nutrients, sediment and metals. Common sources ofpollutants are automobiles, lawn fertilizers, and pet wastes. Accelerated runoff comesfrom impervious surfaces, such as rooftops, sidewalks, streets, and driveways.
