It’s happening. The portables are ready for moving.The sewer lines and the utilities are almost ready to beconnected. There is even a walkway from Riverside Dr.onto the parking lot, so we won’t be competing with carsto get to the facility.In case you haven’t heard, the
Griffith Park AdultCommunity Center
, the latest addition to the LADepartment of Recreation and Parks network of facilitiesdedicated to the 50+ population, will be on the scene,expecting to begin operations in September. The newfacility will be on the parking lot of FriendshipAuditorium on Riverside Drive just south of Los Feliz.The swimming pool and the tennis courts will be ourneighbors. Facility Director Mark Wilson will be workingwith all of us to provide the best programming possible.The facility will serve the neighborhoods of AtwaterVillage, Los Feliz, Franklin Hills, East Hollywood, EchoPark and Elysian Valley, and Silver Lake.
What will this Center Offer?
The Griffith Park Adult CommunityCenter will naturally start small as weget off the ground. The two portableswill have only 5200 square feetconfigured into large, medium andsmall rooms. The key will bescheduling a variety of activitiesthroughout the day and sometimes inthe evening. Some of the plans andideas so far:• Fitness programs (Fitnessequipment has been ordered)• Collaboration with Griffith ParkRangers and staff to organize hiking,nature walks, swimming and tennisclasses• Lectures, Forums, Communitymeetings• Art and craft activities• Collaboration with LAUSD tocontinue classes such as Yoga, ThaiChi, Strength Training and Life Story Writing• Volunteer program to match people wanting tovolunteer with appropriate places.• Computer Lab• A library• A nutrition program• Card and Table games• Interest and Support groups• Classes provided by community and universityprograms• An extensive travel program• Social services assistance provided by HollywoodMultipurpose CenterFor more information contact Stephanie Vendig at (323)667-3043 orvendig@sbcglobal.netor Mark Wilson at(213) 485-5652 ormark.wilson@lacity.org
