Ella Jarman-Pinto is a London-based composer and vocalist. Currently about to finish her degree in contemporary composition at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Ella has studied with Julian Philips, Paul Newland, Emily Hall, and during a four-month Erasmus exchange in 2010 at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, with Kevin O’Connell.
When asked what style she writes, Ella tends to list childhood influences of jazz and folk music, as well as a love for the perfect fifth presented and distorted. Having recently been seduced by medieval music and earlier, Ella happily accepted a commission in January 2011 from professional London-based medieval band, The Artisans. Other recent works include This Little Rose (2010), a setting of Emily Dickinson's text for mezzo and piano, which was workshopped in the Barbican with Nico Muhly in October 2010; Inextricable (2010-11) for choral consort, workshopped by Exaudi, a leading contemporary music ensemble in January 2011; and Ge Rum (2011) set to the text of the poem by Swedish poet Anna Maria Lenngren, commissioned for voice and electronics by emerging mezzo-soprano, Sofie Almroth and premiered in March 2011.
Since March 2009, Ella has organised the Society of New Music, based at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
