th
.Philip suffered from diabetes andneeded regularly insulin. AsSierra Leone is one of thepoorest countries in the worldthere was no way for him to buythe insulin. Therefore the CEUnion of the Netherlands startedaround 1990 an Insulin Fund.Members contributed to providethe insulin. This fund supportedhis insulin needs until his deathfew weeks ago. It was always amiracle how the money arrivedsafely in Sierra Leone, throughtimes of turmoil and war.

Philip was originally employedwith Youth for Christ, and as avolunteer he was CE secretary inSierra Leone. His life has beenrather turbulent. Once he lost hishouse during a heavy storm, Hesuffered many times fromvarious infectious diseases andduring the civil war in SierraLeone he had to evacuate hisfamily to the neighbouringcountry Guinea. Philip himselfstayed at his post during thatwar, but his house was attackedby rebels and three times he wasthreatened with guns at his headto say his last prayers. However,he survived and he showedGod’s Mercy after the war byworking in a camp fortraumatized kid-soldiers, to bringthem the gospel.

WORLD’S CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR NEWS
August 2008
Greetings, Brothers and Sisters in Christian Endeavour !The strong will prevail. That is uppermost in the minds of many today. As Christians our strength is in the Lordour God. Francis Clark, our founder, in the CE Covenant stressed the need to „trust the Lord Jesus Christfor strength“. It is only as we trust Him that we are given the strength to fulfil the next part: „I promise Him todo whatever He would have me do“. In trusting Him we are given the strength to live out our Christian life.May you know the strength of the living God in your daily life.George Campbell - Vice-President WCEU (Europe)

Since 1927 there was no EuropeanCE Convention. But in July this year160 young people from Ireland,Scotland, the Netherlands, GermanyHungary, Croatia, Romania and theUkraine met in Piliscsaba nearBudapest, Hungary, to get a visionfor CE in Europe. They had the opportunity to learnabout the hope and struggle of theyoung generation in other countriesand see how God is building hiskingdom in Europe. Workshops andother activities provided ideas forlocal youth ministry. The daily biblestudies explained aspects of the CEprinciples. Speakers came from theparticipating unions talking inHungarian or English with directtranslation in the other language.Already planning was a greatexperience for the internationalconvention team and strengthenedpersonal relations which laid a goodfoundation for future cooperation.About 20% of the participants wereon their way to or from missionaryactivities in the area.Rudolf Westerheide, Gen. Secretaryof the German CE, pointed out: “It iseasy to start new projects, but thereal challenge is to carry through tosuccessful completion.”Obviously we can expect anotherConnect Europe in not too far future.
