Re:Televising of Proposition 8 Proceedings
Dear Judge Walker,It is my belief that the proceedings regarding the constitutionality of Proposition 8 should betelevised for the following reasons:1)The proceedings and validity of the amendment are issues of public importanceand are in the interest of the majority of the public as it affects millions of lives.2)The proceedings should not be limited to just those fortunate enough to be present in the courtroom, but should be made available to the greater Public; as it is inthe Public’s best interest to have access to seeing the evidence presented on both sidesand assessing it for ourselves.3)Televising the proceedings will encourage discourse and understanding, regardless of the position taken by one side or the other.4)Televising the proceedings demonstrates transparency.5)Televising the proceedings demonstrates the proper, orderly procedure providedfor in the Constitution that will serve to instill confidence in the Process and theappropriate way this matter should be handled.Your Honor, the argument that “those who support Proposition 8 will be at risk of injury or harassment” is, I believe, unfounded and a concern of minimal importance when weighedagainst the necessity of transparency and the lives affected by the passing of Proposition 8.The United States is a country based on freedom of speech and expression, and consequently, demands law proceedings, judicial or legislative, be made available to its populace, thoseaffected by its ruling, unedited and without delay.A spirit of public discourse must remain at the center of the System thereby guaranteeing theintegrity of the Constitution stands firmly in its intended place. Therefore, your Honor, I dulyrequest the proceedings be televised as the Process and its outcome affect us all, for better or worse.Best regards,
