(More) just moved to Peru.....I grew up on the beach in California, so that light speaks to me. I have followed in my grandfathers footsteps by being a jack of all trades and a master of a few, at least i hope so.I have written since i could pick up a pencil i think, but i came to painting late.I have Shawn Theron at the American Visual Arts Museum in Baltimore to thank for it, really. AVAM is one of the most amazing advocates for outsider art and expressionism..Really mind boggling spoon bending genius is displayed there.I met Shawn when I was working as a nanny, (after university where i studied theology and philosophy and lots of other things designed to keep you unemployed for life.)I was looking for a piece of art. i didn't know what i wanted, but i knew i didn't have a lot of money and i knew i wanted something that grabbed me. Shawn was working in the artshop and had just completed a painting called Milky Way, which was this ferociously energetic blue/black/white/yellow piece he had painted on a two by four piece of wood about two feet long. it cost me $15. i have since hauled it around the world with me.And after i bought it ?i went out and got my gear and started. I had taken art in school. but never was much into photographic representation .. which was encouraged in those days by my teachers.AVAM showed me the validity of the inner vision that respects tradition but blows out the boundaries. modern art at its best and most compelling.I fell in love. Words are a particular form of expression, and have been my life's work, but I love the embodiment of art. the sheer physicality of it ,. the huge channel of emotional accessibility, which bypasses the bean counting part of our souls and just reaches in for the heart of us. if its good.I have recently moved to Peru after about a decade in London. I spend a great deal of time...looking. just letting the light sink into my bones..I wake up to skies so remarkably blue. i keep on looking. the light humbles me, has dominated my attempts to paint. asks for respect.I am trying to give it.I'll tell you how it goes. later.
