That degree of abstinence
"The great END of the duty is to be regarded. God 'will have
mercy and not sacrifice.' Fasting, like the Sabbath, was made
for man, and not man for fasting. No one, therefore, ought to
carry abstinence to such an extreme as to impairor endanger his
bodily health

of which there have been undoubtedly, some
mournful examples, bothin ancienta n d modern times. We have no
more right to injure our bodies than we have to enfeeble our
minds. Yet this,i t
must
be acknowledged, is by no means the
extreme to which the masses of professing Christians, at the
present day, are inclined. On the contrary,i tis manifest that
the tendency in general is todeficiency rather thane x c e s s in
this importantduty. For

one who injures himselfby
excessive frequencyor protraction of his seasons of abstinence,
thousands,i tis probable, either wholly neglect this

inadequate manner"

3. With regard to the length of the fast, we have examples of
differing durationin the Scripture:. Moses (Ex. 34:
28),
Eli jah

19:8),
and our Lord Jesus (Matt.
4 : 2 )
all fasted for
forty days and nights; Daniel, fasted twenty-one days (Dan.
10:2-3);
the men of Jabesh-Gilead fasted for seven days after
Saul was killedin battle

10:12);
andEsther andthe
Jews fasted for three days when threatened with destruction at
the hand of
Haman
the Agagite
(Est. 4:16).
Moses, Elijah and Christ, the Lord miraculously preserved their
lives, for no one can go without fooda n dwater for forty days
and live.In the case of the other lengthy fasts of twenty-one
and seven days,i t was probably a partial fast.Andin the case
of the three,i t was probably total, but i t was also a very
unusual circumstance.
