Are there recommended agents to go to? Are there special requirements?
Besides screenplays, what would I need?

I got my agent from a treatment I wrote for a TV show. He liked the idea and took me on as a client. We haven't sold the show yet, but I have the agency to help get the treatment and now pilot through to potential studios/producers.

Mike, it can be a long process, so be prepared for that. If you are interested in a career in writing feature scripts, then feature samples are all you need. If you're interested in television, you'll need some pilots and some specs of established shows. Plays help too. the only special requirement is great writing. You can purchase a HCD (hollywood creative directory) and go through and identify managers who are accepting new clients, who have worked with writers whose work you admire and who are responsive to your GREAT query letter.

I've actually been trying to do just what Julie suggests, finding writers I like or either write the kind of scripts I write and approach their agent or manager. Also, I say don't be afraid to send it to a junior agent or manager if an agency has one. Every agent had to work their way up and build their client roster.

Okay ... let me be more specific.

I'd like to find an agent to represent me for feature screenplays, TV pilot movie scripts, and TV series (this last one in the future).

I guess that's why I started out so general.

I went through the HCD Representation Directory sending submissions to as many agents and managers as possible with no luck.

Should I try again this year? How long should I wait to resend to agents and managers?

Mike, are you querying new material this year? Do you want to share your query letter with us? Maybe it wasn't an effective query letter?

I used Julie's query letter format and on the ONE query I sent out (on a whim) I got a bite. It may work too good, I admit I probably should have finished my rewrite before I did it... yeah, I know.

Okay,

I will be revising this one because the guy in London turned out to be a flake.

I'll be bringing the three science fiction / horror screenplays, which is a trilogy of a war between angels and vampires with three half angel / half vampire FBI agents caught in the middle of the war, to the Great American Pitchfest this year to find a new producer or agent to market them with talent attached to them.

Here is last year's query letter:

Dear Literary Agent:

I'm a screenwriter looking for representation to sell two high concept Greek mythology /science fiction / fantasy scripts that I recently completed. Long before there was a “Xena” or “Wonder Woman,” the ancient world had another champion. Monuments and temples still stand in Turkey and Greece with her image. The Romans knew her as Diana, Goddess of the Hunt. Greece remembers her as Artemis, Goddess of the Amazons. She is remembered as the protector of innocence, the weak, and defenseless. These scripts remember her. The stories are geared for studios worldwide with marketable elements such as Greek gods, extraterrestrials, androids, action adventure, and they are character driven. The movies can be made as either adult animations or live action. They have adult content and scenes of nudity. So, they will undoubtedly receive an “R” rating for cinemas.

Demographics: eighteen to forty-nine-year-olds.

Logline: RED ARTEMIS After the holocaust of the Olympian gods, Diana of Earth resurrects on another planet as a mother who battles a god to save her army captain son from becoming an instrument of war.

Mike’s Bio

Most recently, I sold a horror short script, The Hand Of Nemesis, that I wrote on January 19, 2007 to Rack Focus Productions.

I have a producer in London interested in three other scripts that I wrote. The producer is working on funding the movies right now. The scripts are science fiction / horror stories that are sequels to each other with lots of action, special effects, and creature effects.

I have two books in print with Barnes & Noble on the Internet, THE REFUGE OF NIGHT and HEART OF A KILLER. They are both vampire fiction books with characters that I created. Some time before that, I was a ghost writer for a comic book science fict...
