RE: The U-shaped bar and coils. Illustration didn't show how to hook up the coils. Are they in series with battery? And if so, then does the outer wire on coil 1 hook to the beginning (inner loop) on the 2nd coil? This is the way I did it. It does make a strong electro-magnet, and there is some residual magnetism in the U bar after I disconnect battery.

Page 19: Bend a bar that is 1 1/2" thick. How do you proposed to do that? Wind 2 spools of 16 gauge wire 1,500 turns? All I have in my shop is 1 1/2" thich axle U bolt, and 20 gauge wire. I wound this wire on a 1/2" copper pipe. I have over 700 turns. It is already 2" thick. If you use 16 gauge wire, and 1,500 turns, wouldn't it be too thick to even slide over your 1 1/2" bar?
