34.IMMEDIATEACTION.
b. Procedure.--(1) Rifle failsto
fire.-Withthepalmupand usingthelittlefinger,pulloperatingrodtotherear.Releaseoperatingrod, and if operatinghandle goesfully home,aim andfire. To avoidinjury incase of a hangfire,the handis soheldthatno portionof thepalmorwrist can bestruck bythe operatingrod inits rapid rearwardmovement.(2)
 Bolt cannot be locked.-If 
afterfollowingtheprocedureprescribedin(1) above,thebolt cannotgo completelyfor-ward andlock, againpull operatinghandletothe rear.Check fora batteredround,dirt,or obstructionontheface of thebolt,in thechamber,or inthe lockinglug recess. Discardthebatteredround;remove theobstruction.Reload,aim,andfire.(3)
 Bolt locksbut rifleagain, failsto fire.-If 
after procedureprescribedin (1) abovetheriflecontinuestofailto fire,againpulloperatinghandletotherear.If nocartridgeis ejected,reduceobstructionin clip bypressingand rotatingthe uppercartridges.Reload,aim,andfire.(4)
 Rifle failsto feed.-Keep
riflein actionby manuallyworkingoperatinghandle.A detailedexaminationforthemalfunctionmaybe madelaterwhentimepermits.c.Theabove procedureof immediateactionwill almostin-variablykeep theriflein action.In casethisimmediateactionis notsuccessful,amoredetailedexaminationfor thepossiblemalfunctionslisted inparagraph 35emaybe madeascircumstancespermit.
