Introduction, etc to The Diary of Anne Frank, published in North Korea (Education Publishing House, Pyongyang, 2002). Photocopied at Information Center on North Korea, National Library of Korea, Seoul.
I was inspired by reading a report several years ago that Anne Frank is taught in North Korean schools, probably this CBS News 60 Minutes report that claimed that "North Korea is using her diary, not to teach how Anne suffered at the hands of the German Nazis, but to warn the students how they could suffer at the hands of those they call 'American Nazis.' " http://bit.ly/geOrOZ
But I seem also to recall a more sympathetic PBS (?) report about the diary being taught in a Pyongyang school. Unfortunately I can't find it now.
A Korean friend has taken a look at the introduction and gave me a summary:
Writer of the prologue) Briefly wrote about 21st century’s peaceful world; ideal world of creative wealth and human’s dignity,
Turned to: today, the new century, there are still sounds of gunfire of the war and children’s roar
60 years ago, .. brief intro of the story about the eager for freedom and peace from a 13 years old girl. … …
The story described the aim of keeping peaceful world that no repeating war of aggression and it is aim of the whole world.
Publisher has translated this book for reminding youngsters of new century the unforgetful memories of ‘ war of aggression’ and hoping to encourage new generation who is going to take a part in the reunion of the country.
