The objective of Young Inventor Competition is to encourage innovation and implementation of technology insolving real-life problems. Through this competition we hope to raise students’ interest in engineering and hencenurturing the future generation of the profession.
The information Day was successfully held on 7 November 2009marking the launch of the competition. More than a hundred studentsand teachers attended themeeting. Mr. K S Szeto andIr K K Lo of IMechE HongKong Branch, Ir Barry Lee of HKIE MMNC shared theirviews on innovation and technology application with the audiences. Thecompetition rules were thenexplained and sampleprototype of the competitionwas demonstrate with thehelp of IMechE YoungMembers Mr. Andy Cheungand Mr. Titus Tam.

Round 1 - Hydraulic Robot Arm

This competition was separatedinto two rounds. The first roundwas held on 5 December 2009 at the foyer of Hong Kong PolytechnicUniversity. There was a record-breaking 40 teams competed on theday.The theme of Round 1 was“Hydraulic Robot Arm”. Contestantsdesigned robot arms that wereactuated by hydraulic pistons andwas allowed 3 minutes to transferpaper cups filled with water fromone place to another. The teamwhich collects the largestvolume of water win in theefficiency category while there were also aninnovative category whichwas awarded to the mostcreative design.Sing Yin Secondary Schoolled in the efficiencycategory after the roundwhile Aberdeen TechnicalSchool’s Robot Arm scored the highest mark in theinnovation category.RadioTelevisionHong Kong (RTHK) TVcrew came and shot theevent on the day andalso interviewed Mr. WK Chow, Chairman of IMechE Hong KongBranch. The programmewas broadcasted topublic on television oneweek after.
