Wisconsin Warrior Summit anOverwhelming Success!

An overflow crowd filled the ballrooms of the MilwaukeeCounty War Memorial on October 22, 2009 for the first WisconsinWarrior Summit.Dryhootch partnered withMental Health America (MHA), NAMI, Disability Rights, Easter Seals, the Milwaukee MentalHealth Task Force, the VA, and theVet Center to bring together health professionals,veterans, andfamilies to learn about PTSD.John Scocos, Secretary of WIDepartment of Veteran Affairs, just back from a second tour in Iraqwas the keynote speaker. He presented a Proclamation from theGovernor calling for Oct 22 asPTSD Awareness Day in the Stateof Wisconsin.Sessions included a panel of men and women veterans fromVietnam to our current conflictstalking of how PTSD affectedthem. Dr. Mike McBride from theVA Mental Health Department (andan Army Iraq Veteran) gave a great presentation on how the veteran istrained for war, but not for the wayhome.A panel of community healthexperts including the VA, Dr.Bernstein from Dryhootch, AuroraHealth, NAMI, MHA,

“first art exhibit of veteran art on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum”
Dryhootch partnered with the National VeteransArt Museum and the Milwaukee Art Museum tobring the first ever exhibit of art by veterans inMilwaukee.About 65 pieces ranging from large sculptures tophotos and paintings from the National VietnamVeterans Art Museum will be on display throughNov. 15 in honor of Veterans Day.The Milwaukee Art Museum and the gallery alongthe Calatrava wing that faces Lincoln MemorialDrive was chosen for the small exhibit. Becausethe museum shares space with the war memorial,Museum Director Dan Keegan thought it wasimportant to celebrate the common heritage of both organizations.

orts to open ourdoors in Milwaukee. We hope to make anannouncement before the years end. Anattempt to rehab a building at the VA groundto a halt when the VA switched direction andclosed the doors. Our full attention is themission of helping our veterans and theirfamilies, and a place our of own is a requirement to o
