Owen Roe Expands into Washington State
It’s not an unfamiliar sight to see Oregon winemaker DavidO’Reilly driving around the hills surrounding the Yakima Valley inhis high-mileage Ford Explorer, scouting out vineyards andvineyard locations for possible fruit sources. O’Reilly is expandinghis winery operations in Washington State, and his number onegoal is to locate the best vineyards for wine production. The winemaker who co-founded Sineann Winery and is the co-owner and winemaker for Owen Roe Winery in Newberg, Ore, willbe introducing new wines and bringing a new Washington wineryto the market.O’Reilly’s new winery location is not a pretty sight at first, but thepotential to restore the old dairy office and five acres of storagetanks and outbuildings is huge. Prior to the purchase, the locationwas the site for Apex Cellars and Washington Hills winery.O’Reilly is restoring and cleaning up the compound to build ahigh-end, custom crush facility and a new winery, temporarilynamed Cream Winery of Yakima. The winery will produce quart-sized milk containers, filled withwine and only for sale at the winery and in limited restaurants. The containers will be recyclable—a constant thread throughoutall of O’Reilly’s endeavors. He is also creating several new labelsfor value-priced wines—Mirth (Chardonnay) and Lenore (Syrah, named after the Edgar Allen Poe poem) and another red wineblend, all produced at the Sunnyside facility with Yakima Valleygrapes.

Soter Mineral Springs Vineyard Pinot noir 2006Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 93 Points
Soter Vineyards Mineral Springs Vineyard Pinot noir 06 received 93 points fromRobert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Pinot Noir Mineral Springs has anespecially expressive bouquet with floral notes, pain grille, damp earth, blackraspberry, and blueberry. On the palate, the wine is layered, bordering on opulent. The savory, ripe, spicy dark fruit flavors persist into a lengthy, velvety textured finish.Give it 2-3 years and drink it from 2011 to 2020."
Fidelitas 2005 Champoux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven HillsWine Spectator 92 Points
“Rich and ripe, delivering a plush mouthful of blackberry, currant and plum fruit. Hintsat smoke and espresso as the finish narrows to a solid beam. The tannins arepolished, and acidity balances the lushness, so the wine comes off as refined. Bestfrom 2010 through 2015”.The Champoux is Fidelitas’ take on the highly regarded Champoux Vineyard fruit.Highlights of intense, ripe black fruit flavors create a complex arc of mocha, blackcherry, and cassis in the aroma and on the palate.
Celebration Gamay Noir 07 from Evening Land VineyardsHighly Recommended by Avalon Wine
Evening Lands Vineyards Celebration Gamay noir Seven Springs Vineyard is madefrom a small block of old vine Gamay noir in one of Oregon's best known vineyards.Intriguing and delicious dark fruit flavors and scents make Celebration an apt namefor this wine. Scents of blackberry, currant, and a hint of blackstrap molasses arerestated in the flavor. Dark fruits, especially cassis/black currant, add depth to arefreshing, juicy wine. Hints of licorice and French Black Currant Pastilles accentuatethe unique qualities of this immediately drinkable wine. You will never think of Beaujolais the same way again..
Chateau Ste Michelle White Riesling Late Harvest EthosWine Spectator 97 Points
"Has amazing balance and depth, splaying out its lime-scented apricot and honeyflavors, then pulling it all together into a tremendously long, exquisitely balanced finishthat hints at all sorts of spice and floral notes. An utterly seamless wine that has thebalance to age gracefully. Drink now through 2026". 375 cases made.

Arterberry MareshMaresch VineyardPinot noir 06 $75
Arterberry Maresh Pinot noir 06 is one of Oregon's finest wines. Mouthwatering aromas of fresh red fruit mingling with darker berryelements, heady cinnamon, and mineral accents. The pure flavors have so many layers, showingpurple berries, fresh and dried cherries, blackcurrants even a touch of wild strawberry. Ripefruit is exceptionally balanced by the acidity, which Jim maintained by picking the grapes at just the right time. The 06 Maresh has an amazing, silky texture withultra-fine tannins on the long finish, echoing purefruit, white pepper, dried herbs and a hint of truffle. While it's drinking well now, the 06 Mareshwill hit its stride in 3-4 years and drink well for over a decade.Jim barrel ages his wines for up to two years, allowing the wines to have a seamless texture. No new oak was used in making the 2006Maresh Vineyard Pinot noir because, as Jimsays, when you have such amazing fruit, youdon't need to put make up on it.

 Jim ArterberryMaresh
New Generation Steward of Landmark Oregon Winery
The year 1959 is not one oftenassociated with the Oregon wineindustry, but it's the year that Jim andLoie Maresh purchased their 27 acrehilltop orchard smack in the center of Dundee's Red Hills -- now called the"Cote d'Or" of Oregon Pinot noir.Gradually expanding to 124 acres of possibly the most prime vineyard realestate in Oregon, Maresh Vineyard isthe fifth oldest in Oregon, withplantings from 1970 on.Jim and Loie's daughter, MarthaMaresh, married Fred Arterberry in theearly 1980's. Fred made wine for the family (at the Eyrie Vineyards' winery) firstunder the “Red Hills Vineyard” label, then under the"Arterberry Cellars" label. Fred's 1985 ArterberryReserve Pinot noir received 95 points from WineSpectator, an unheard of score for the time. (Onlyeleven Oregon wines in total have received a 95from Wine Spectator). At right above is a rare photoof Jim and Martha with baby Jim (now ArterberryMaresh’s third generation winemaker). In 1990, with Fred's passing, the Arterberry Cellarslabel disappeared. Rex Hill, Penner-Ash, ArcherySummit, Daedalus, Sineann, and Scott Paulwineries purchased the fruit, with some wines madeunder the Red Barn label for sale at the Mareshfamily tasting room.
The Third Generation
Jim Arterberry-Maresh, Martha and Fred's son (pictured above), grew up with thevines, hearing about his father's wines and learning the vineyard business. Lastyear, he revived the Arterberry label, incorporating his last name "ArterberryMaresh". Jim's first releases show that Fred's skills have been passed down. Thethird generation of Maresh Vineyard and Arterberry Maresh Cellars is off andrunning!

Soter's Pinot noir Beacon Hill Vineyard 06 received 92 points fromRobert Parker's Wine Advocate:
Soter Vineyards "Mineral Springs" Pinot noir 06 received 93 points fromRobert parker's Wine Advocate:"The 2006 Pinot Noir Mineral Springshas an especially expressive bouquet with floral notes, pain grille, dampearth, black raspberry, and blueberry. On the palate, the wine is layered, bordering on opulent. The savory, ripe, spicy dark fruit flavors persist intoa lengthy, velvety textured finish. Give it 2-3 years and drink it from 2011to 2020. "This is incredible Pinot. Hands down oneof the top 20 Oregon Pinots of the 2006vintage. Beguiling aromas of red fruit, deep spice, and mineral aromas draw youinto the silky and voluptuous body.Layered black raspberry, wild strawberry, and blueberry are accented by a citrusnote, providing freshness to the ideallyripe fruit. Grace and power merge in theMineral Springs 06, creating a stunningOregon Pinot noir. From the winery: "As the second offeringfrom the Mineral Springs estate, this wineoffers an impressive combination of power and purity. Its ruby-red hue previews anose of wild strawberry and cranberrywhile the palate shows bing cherry, red plum, clove and sandalwood withan undercurrent of black fruits reminiscent of marionberry and crushedblackberry. Layer upon layer of depth and complexity are revealed in avelvety texture and lingering finish. The wine tells the story of the vintageas well as the vineyard, delivering a core of varietally correct Pinot Noir fruit characteristics coupled with a unique personality that can only comefrom Mineral Springs".Mineral Springs is a 32-acre vineyard, planted in 2002 on an east- westridge just east of Carlton. The soils, derived from fractured siltstone andsandstone, are ancient marine sediments that drain well and are thusperfectly suited to viticulture. The vineyard sits just under 400 feet andfaces south and southwest on a highly uniform and gentle slope. Wethink this is a perfect spot for Pinot Noir.In 2006, Mineral Springs was harvested under clear skies during thevery last days of September. A warm, dry growing season andmeticulous vineyard management contributed to the desired yield of 2.0tons per acre. Resulting fruit was packed with flavor and lush withripeness. All of these grapes were farmed without pesticides or residualherbicides and certified as sustainable by Oregon’s L.I.V.E program.oastand baking spice aromas, highlighting copious dark fruit elements, suggestive of Oregon blackberries and blueberries, with lively top notes
