Letter to Facilitator
Hi, my name is John Hays. My wife and I adopted 13 children, 11 of whom have beendiagnosed with Fetal Alcohol. Because of the devastating statistics our children face,we along with some other caring people, created HaysKids, a non-profit organization. Our heart’s desire is to help individuals with Fetal Alcohol, their families, and caregivers. This E-workbook is an attempt to do that.Reading our E-Book, “Pathways to Success” will help you understand and prepare youto facilitate this workbook. It can be found atwww.hayskids.com; it is written for parentsand caregivers. The first 14 chapters plus the conclusion corresponds with the lessonsin this workbook. The goals of this workbook are to:
•
Help demystify Fetal Alcohol. Knowledge can help a person to not bediscouraged, to be patient, and to have hope for their future
•
Teach the person about Fetal Alcohol, much as you would teach someone withdiabetes about their disease
•
Raise self awareness of the how Fetal Alcohol has affected the person doing thisworkbook and how it will affect them in the future
•
Give the person tools to help them function in life as best they can
•
Leach higher executive functioning skills, which means how one organizes their thinking and life
•
Create dialog, to help those involved to understand each other
•
Have the person “Make a Deal,” so if they have struggles, they will agree toseek helpThe following things will help prepare you to be a facilitator
•
Try to be patient, calm, and understanding
•
When either of you are feeling overwhelmed, take a break, come back to it later
•
Listen to them, let them explain their feelings and thinking
•
This takes time, don’t rush it
•
Realize they have organic brain damage, at times nothing helps
•
Remember about developmental growth spurts, just because they cannot do
