President’s Message
Well the 2008-09 season has finally come to a close and we can focus our thoughts on the upcoming season which begins in early September. Iguess it’s true when they say that there really is “no rest for the wicked.”Last year was probably our busiest and most successful season ever, withclose to 14,000 games officiated. There were some very notablemoments, with a number of people receiving both provincial and nationalappointments, and in most cases, officiating the gold or bronze medalgames. This shows that CBOA continues to produce some of the verybest officials in the province, and the country. In addition to our nationalaccolades, Michael Weiland received his FIBA card in August and isundoubtedly facing an exciting and successful international career.Congratulations to all!The new season brings with it some changes in the CBOA. First we havea new website that is fully functional and looks
FANTASTIC!
A big thankyou to Ken Runquist for doing such an incredible job, especially withinsuch a short time frame. Second, Evaluation Chair Ian Pollard is workingdiligently on bringing a new CBOA Rating System up to snuff. This will bea daunting task considering he is doing it parallel to CABO’s new nationalCertification Program. Third, Treasurer Evan Picton has hired on a coupleof assistants to help with our books and other financial matters. Evan iscurrently training them so that our new payment procedures and budgetingprocess will be in place by the start of the year.Perhaps the most significant change is the retirement of John Weiland asCBOA Commissioner – a position that he has held for over eleven seasons – and the conclusion of over four decades of service as an official, builder, and mentor. John was more than an assigner – he trained, evaluated andmentored almost all of the officials in our organization today, and themajority of our most successful officials working the top levels. Put simply, there is not a single official in the CBOA that has not benefited from John’s

Hi all,Welcome to another busy season! Here’s a bit of an update on a fewchanges to the CBOA Finance Department – as well as some reminders:First, we would like to remind all officials that advance cheques will bewritten and mailed to the address on the Arbiter
on

the third Sunday of each month
. That is, all advance requests will be held until that Sundayand processed then. When there are extenuating circumstances andemergency situations, CBOA will do its best to accommodate thepossibility of sending out an advance sooner. But for efficiency reasons, advances will generally only be sent out at the aforementioned time. Tospeed up the receipt of your advance, and to make the process moreefficient, please make sure that your mailing address and other contactinformation on the Arbiter is up to date.Secondly, I am pleased to announce that we have two AssistantTreasurers on board for the upcoming season. Admir Chihaluca and ChrisPelletier will take on duties similar to mine, and will be available to respondto any questions about the CBOA’s finances. You can contact Admir atadmirc@mac.comand Chris atpelsh22@hotmail.com  Lastly, if you are interested in how the CBOA accounts for your money, annual financial statements will be available for you to review at the AnnualGeneral Meeting on September 10
th
. As always, if you have anycomments, concerns, or suggestions for CBOA’s financial practices, please let me, Admir, or Chris know.I look forward to seeing you all at the AGM!Regards,Evan Picton
