woman(Megan)cameforpsychothera-
py.Shesaidthatwhatshewasnotget-
tinginlifewasempathyfromherhus-
band.Shenarratedmanyinstances
wherehedismissedordevaluedher
feelings.Whenaskedifshehaddis-
cussedthatwithhim,Megansaid,
"noway,hewouldonlygetmadatme."
Herfamilybackgroundwasfullofstoriesof
authoritariandiscipline.Shecould
neverdialoguewithherparents.Inthis
instanceMegan'sbrainwasvery"state
dependent,"meaningitrecognizedpat-
ternsofemotionsratherthancontent
andsoshegotstuckinherstoryandher
badcontent.Shecouldnotletgo,for-
giveordealsuccessfullywithherexpe-
rienceorherhusbanduntilshelearned
howtoforgive.
