State Motto
For more than 200 years, New Hampshire has held fast to the values of self-reliance, small government, and independence. For its symbolicsignificance, there is no state more suited to the Free State Project.The motto was popularized by General John Stark, a New Hampshirecitizen and leader in the Revolutionary War, who wrote,
Live free or die. Death is not the worst of evils.
New Hampshire was the first state todeclare itself independent fromEngland in 1774New Hampshire patriots were the firstto seize powder and guns from thefort of William and Mary in 1774
On December 14, 1774, more than 400 NH Seacoast-area patriotsmobbed the gates of the William and Mary fort following the visit of Paul Revere confirming rumors of English ships and troops on the way. Within hours, the fort was overwhelmed and the patriots made awaywith 97 barrels of powder later distributed to militias throughout thestate as building blocks for the nascent continental army.
