1.
Make pattern according to book size
.
My finshed pattern makes a snug fit and measures:
Body: 32cm x 17cm. Strap: 30cm x 8cm.
The book I am covering is 18cm x 14cm.
Make adequate allowance for seams and a little “ease”. I allow1cm for seams plus a centimetre or two each way for ease.
Main body includes “flaps” which will fold over to enclose thebook. Allow approx 5 cm (excluding seam allowance) inwardsfrom each side where flap fold is estimated. and mark this onthe pattern for reference. A centre line can also be marked onthe pattern for reference, along with a horizontal centre line tomake it easier to centre the strap eventually.
The strap should be long enough to wrap once around the bookfrom front edge to back edge plus 2 or 3 inches overlap.
2.
Cut out the pattern as follows:
1 x main fabric for the main body, plus 1 x stiff fusible interfacing the same size.
1 x lining for the main body. This can be a plain fabric as it wont show.
2 x strap in the same fabric which could be a contrasting fabric to the main body. If thefabric is quite heavy, ie: canvas, then interfacing should not be required.
Use the book you are covering to line up fabric pattern symmetrically if applicable
3.
Make the main body
Iron the fabric and lining, then attach the fusible interfacing to the fabric.
Pin right sides of fabric and lining together, sew, and leave one end unsewn in order toturn right side out. Before turning out I like to press those seams down 1cm to ease sew-ing later. After pressing, the main body will look like this (noteunsewn edge is turned in). This can now be top stitched all the way round*

Now you need to fold over the flaps evenly. Wrap the cover around the book, andwhen evenly done, mark the edges with pins. Then flatten out, and make sure the pins arein the same place top and bottom: Leave these pins in place for now.
4.
Make the Strap
First ascertain which side is which - ie: which side will be sewnto the cover (fabric down) and which side will be showing. Ap-ply a little strip of fusible interfacing to each wrong side whereeach part of the the magnetic clip will be.
Pin right sides of flap together leaving a gap along one longside (make sure that this is the bottom if the strap is facing you)Press the open seam in by 1cm before turning out as it willmake the next steps easier. Turn out, push all corners out sothe are sharp, finger press into shape then insert magnets.Insert the “female” side of the magnet and then pin thestrap to the book where the flap is marked, wrap thecover and the strap around the book (don
t forget to puta pen on the spine for the strap to wrap around) andascertain where the “male” section of the magnetshould be. Mark this with a pin, then insert the magnet. After inserting both magnets, the strap can be top stitched along all edges except the edgewhich is to be sewn to the front cover.
