1.
Make pattern according to book size
.
My finshed pattern makes a snug fit and measures:
Body: 32cm x 17cm. Strap: 30cm x 8cm.
The book I am covering is 18cm x 14cm.
Make adequate allowance for seams and a little “ease”. I allow1cm for seams plus a centimetre or two each way for ease.
Main body includes “flaps” which will fold over to enclose thebook. Allow approx 5 cm (excluding seam allowance) inwardsfrom each side where flap fold is estimated. and mark this onthe pattern for reference. A centre line can also be marked onthe pattern for reference, along with a horizontal centre line tomake it easier to centre the strap eventually.
The strap should be long enough to wrap once around the bookfrom front edge to back edge plus 2 or 3 inches overlap.
2.
Cut out the pattern as follows:
1 x main fabric for the main body, plus 1 x stiff fusible interfacing the same size.
1 x lining for the main body. This can be a plain fabric as it wont show.
2 x strap in the same fabric which could be a contrasting fabric to the main body. If thefabric is quite heavy, ie: canvas, then interfacing should not be required.
Use the book you are covering to line up fabric pattern symmetrically if applicable
3.
Make the main body
Iron the fabric and lining, then attach the fusible interfacing to the fabric.
Pin right sides of fabric and lining together, sew, and leave one end unsewn in order toturn right side out. Before turning out I like to press those seams down 1cm to ease sew-ing later. After pressing, the main body will look like this (noteunsewn edge is turned in). This can now be top stitched all the way round*
