hile some degree of memory loss is commonas people age, progressive memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease are serious medical issuesand far from normal occurances. Alzheimer’s is a disease thatattacks brain cells and results not only in loss of memory, butimpaired thinking and behavior. Scientists are still not certainabout what causes Alzheimer’s, although family history and agehave been identified as potential risk factors. While there is noknown cure for the disease, medication and non-drug therapiesare available which may reduce some of its symptoms. For seniors and their families today, Alzheimer’s is a very realand growing issue that no one wants to think about, yet itcan’t be ignored. As a cure may still years away, the importanceof early diagnosis can’t be stressed too strongly, since propertreatment may slow the devastating progression of the disease. At Sycamore Village, we are pleased to dedicate this newsmagazine to helping members of our community betterunderstand the various stages of memory loss and Alzheimer’sdisease. Working in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, we’ve included information on how to recognizethe onset of Alzheimer’s, what to expect when you’re caring fora loved one with the disease, and how to choose a residentialcare community when you can no longer keep an affectedfamily member at home. If you’re worried about becominga victim of Alzheimer’s yourself, you’ll also find some of thelatest research on reducing the risks of developing the disease. We hope you find these insights of value. If you wouldlike additional information on this or related topics, please contact us. We will be happy to arrange a private,no-obligation consultation, including a personal memoryscreening, at your convenience.Brinda Prather
