Report to the Greater Swansea Community on Memory Loss
 A
lzheimer’s changes the lives of everyoneit touches. If dealing with the erraticbehaviors and mood swings of a lovedone with memory loss proves to be a frustratingexperience for adult caregivers, it can be evenmore confusing for children. To a child, it mayseem like Grandma or Grandpa has changeddrastically in a very short time, and this transfor-mation can be puzzling because he or shedoesn’t look “sick.”The impact is often quite startling, particularlywhen contact is relatively infrequent, for example, when it is limited to holidays or important familygatherings. All of a sudden, perhaps from oneseason to the next, Grandma or Grandpa mayno longer recognize a favorite grandchild, or beable to interact or carry on a conversation. It is only when children spend a lot of time witha relative with memory loss that they see the dis-ease’s progress firsthand and begin to recognizethat something is very seriously wrong. They maynotice that Grandpa forgets things with growingfrequency, asks the same questions over and over, and even has trouble finding the right words forcommon items. People with Alzheimer’s may cry, become angry for no apparent reason and evenbehave in ways that children find embarrassing. Worst of all, a loved one with Alzheimer’s mayremember them one day, and treat them like astranger the next.
