[NOTHING MORE THAN A…MOOR]
December 11, 2008
When the pride that is bestowed within people is threatened they seemto have accumulated fear of situation. With fear, each and every one canonly find sheer ignorance, or not being educated on a particular subject. InShakespeare’s play,
Othello
it can easily be taken to mean this when Iagoplays tricks and chaos upon Othello’s life. Iago instilled fear in Brabantio, thefather of the young woman Othello fell in love with. Iago did this successfullyby warning him of the Moor children that would come, the so-called magicand witchcraft Othello used to woo Desdemona, and how the people of thetown would look down upon his family. However, Othello was proved that heand Desdemona’s love was true, then after the Duke believed that a man of his stature would woo any woman that he could, even the Duke’s own fleshand blood.Iago has flawlessly proved himself a very jealous and unjust man in just the first two scenes by defying his friendship with Othello and givingBarabantio and Rodrigo false fears. By telling Barabantio “ I am one, sir, thatcomes to tell you your daughter and the Moor…” Stop. We see just from thishalf of the quote that he is obviously putting emphasis and fear into what heis saying by the wordings.“…are now making the beast with two backs.” Bythis we can see his trying to say their child will be deformed, half-white andhalf-moor, weird and outcasted. This made Barabantio feel that his wordswere oppressed and that is when Iago’s insitllment of ignorance and fearbegan.
