The first volume of the free Motion Mountain physics text. The book is written for undergraduates and for anybody interested in physics: it guarantees to be surprising and challenging on every page. How can you determine the density of the Moon by watching the sea? How can you show experimentally in two seconds that the Earth rotates? Can a chocolate bar be cut into parts as small as imaginable? How do you measure the weight of a car with a ruler? How do flowers grow? How do sea waves form?
In fact, all the adventures told in the text start with the following questions:
How do things move? Why do things move? What is motion? Why does it exist?
With little mathematics, starting from observations of everyday life, the text explores the most fascinating parts of mechanics, thermodynamics, special and general relativity, electrodynamics, quantum theory and modern attempts at unification. This is the first of a total of six volumes.
Enjoy!
Christoph Schiller
