DUCATIONMiddle school students have unique developmental characteristics. This age group has such a wide rangeof intellectual, physical, psychological, social, and ethical systems developing, that the transition fromchildhood to young adulthood can become complex. Physical education teachers are uniquely qualified toassist students and their parents during this transition. The ultimate purpose of physical education is to guide your child into being physically active for theirlifetime. This PE program is developmentally and instructionally appropriate for middle-school studentsand promotes a physically active lifestyle. It accommodates a variety of individual differences such ascultural identity, previous movement experience, fitness- and skill-levels, and intellectual, physical, andsocial/emotional maturity. Instruction incorporates best practices (derived from both research andexperience) for teaching early adolescents in ways that encourage success for all. The provision of a safeand inclusive learning environment allows students to experience positive, challenging, and enjoyableactivity while learning about benefits and personal health and well-being.This PE class is an instructional program within the structure of Virgil Middle School that focuses onstudent learning of physical activity while gaining motor skills and health-related fitness. Classes focus onthe whole child, teaching cognitive and affective—as well as psychomotor—skills. Instruction teaches forthe attainment of national standards in physical education.
