In the month of May 09, our focus was on Summer Camp of PPY children,Swavalambankendraand participation in NWIPT 09. Results were declared forclass 10 and class 12 children and a good amount of counseling was done toindividually decide the future course of our children.
Sopan SwavalambanKendra(SSK)
The 9 girls from Barasirohicompleted One-month bag making course. Theylearned making 4 kinds of bags during this period. On 4

May we had a smallfunction which marked the closing of the Bag making 1
st
batch course andbeginning of 4 new courses (a) Repairing Electric Appliances, (b) MakingArtificial Jewelries, (c) Beautician’s Course and (d) Sewing. In the first course10 children were admitted whereas in each of the other three courses, 20participants were admitted. In the repairing course, all the children admittedwere boys whereas in rest of the three courses only girls were admitted. Allthese were present together with the 9 girls of Bag making course.The function started with Lamp lightingbefore the Image of Goddess Saraswatifollowed by Introduction to Shiksha Sopanby Dr H C Verma. The working of Swavalambankendrawas introduced by theKendra SanchalikaMrsPoojaMishra. All theTrainers of the 5 courses were introduced tothe gathering. The coordinator ShriJaiprakashjinarrated the schedule and toldabout the rules to be followed by thetrainees.A good participation came from the IITKCampus community. Principal of CampusSchool MrsSushmaVora, Principal oOpportunity School MrR S Srivastav, Socialactivist and Shiksha Sopan EC inviteemember MrsRita Singh, SRE Electrical EnggMrsNeeruChabra, MrsNazma, MrsSangeetaUpadhyay, Secretary of WomensAssociation MrsGuhapriya, Professor in MEDr M S Kalrawere some of the Campusresidents present to encourage the children.
 
The programme also had a display andevaluation components. The bag making girlswere given an examination at the end of thecourse which involved making two bags, one of the variety of her choice and the other fromchoice of the trainer. These 18 bags were ondisplay with names written on it. After thefunction was formally over, each of the willingvisitors (a total of 15) was given an evaluationtable. The table contained names of thecandidates and columns for marks. Each visitorthen looked at all the bags and gave marks.The final result was compiled by taking averageof all these marks for each candidate.All the visitors greatly appreciated the skill thatthe girls acquired in just one month training.Many of them had seen a Sopan programme forthe first time and they blessed the children andcongratulated the team for putting up a usefulshow. A display of artificial jewelries was put upby the corresponding Instructor.From the examination conducted in the month of February, 11 children wereselected for the Summer Camp 2009 under PratibhaPoshanYojana. Nine of these had also attended Summer Camp of 2008. There are seven girls and fourboys. The 36-day camp started on 23
rd
May in Quarter no. 458 allotted by theIITK administration for the purpose.Classes for Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and English are given everyday.Each class is for 75 minutes duration so that the teacher has good opportunity todwell upon the topic and get it practiced in the class itself. Normally twoinstructors are present during the class so that monitoring of each child can bedone properly.
PPY Summer Camp started
Apart from the regular classes, Computereducation, Science experiments, Cultural andsports activities are also part of this summercamp. A team of around 24 memberscomprising IITK Faculty, Students, localvolunteers and some teachers from outsideIITK and even outside from Kanpurcity, isinvolved in academic activities. Other thanthis, few other local volunteers are involvedin other management related aspects of thiscamp.
 
Shiksha Sopan science cell actively participated in the academicmanagement of  “National Workshop on Innovative Physics Teaching.”, NWIPT-09. held on 15

May to 20
th
May. All the 50 experiments designed for the workshop wereassembled by our Science Cell and properly placed at right placeat right hours.In the process they also learnt a lot. Those involved closely with this activitywere Deepak Agnihotri, RohitNishad, RitoshShukla, Deepak Mishraand RanjitKumar. MrAmitBajpai, despite his semester exams going on provided a goodguidance to the team. All 42 teachers were quite impressed by the almostflawless management by Shiksha Sopan volunteers.The registration bags were stitched by Sopan swavalambanKendra girls who haddone the one-month training course.Shiksha Sopan children put up a 2 hour cultural show on 19

May evening. Thechildren gave a very good performance comprising of dances, songs and skits.The participant teacherswere quite impressed by the Sopan Children and Sopanactivities. Each participant gave a token donation for Shiksha Sopan.
Participation in NWIPT 09
During the camp itself, that is on 30
th
May,results of these children of Class XthBoardexams were declared. Out of 11 children, 10passed with 1st division and 1 with IInddivision. 3 Children got more than 75 %.Highest among them was 83.5%. It isheartening to see that our guidance to thesechildren has been helpful to them. Accordingto our English instructor Mr Srinath, all theboys were happy with their performance andmost of the girls were unhappy as theyexpected better results. Proper counselingwas done to tell them that it is the skill andknowledge that will finally count.
