The main focus of Shiksha Sopan in the month of June 09 was on the SummerCamp of PratibhaPoshanYojana(PPY) which was running since 23rd May andconcluded on 28
th
June. Lots of studies, lots of fun and lots of personalitydevelopment, was the central theme. Sopan SwawalambanKendra (SSK) wasalso in full swing where four courses were running in parallel.
Summer Camp, PPY
A total of 11 children were called for the camp which included 7girls and 4boys. The selection of these 11 were based on their regularity, performanceduring the last one year of interaction with us and a test conducted duringthe Mimi Camp of January 09. Out of these, 8 continued from thefirstsummer camp while for the rest 3 it was first of its own kind.Day used to start with half an hour Yoga orlight physical exercise including morningwalk. Regular classes of Maths, Physics,Chemistry and English were held from 7:15am to 1:00 pm with a 30 min breakfastbreak. Total 31 classes were given to eachsubject. There were at least 2 instructors in aclass to make it more interactive and also tofocus on each and every child.There was special emphasis on computerclasses in this camp which were scheduled inthe evening 7:00 to 8:00 pm on eachTuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Total 15 hrwere given for computer classes with severalinstructors and at least 3 laptops in eachclass. Children learned right from mousehandling up to the use of internet includingMicrosoft office.Classes on Cultural and moral issues were also arranged on alternate daysin the evening from 7 to 8 pm. In these classes, there were music lessonsand lectures on health, environment, Indian history, tourists places in Indiaetc.
 
There was a special program arranged byDRPG office for interaction with SURGEstudents. SURGE is a summer camparranged by IITK in which mainly Engg.Students from NITscome for theengineering exposure. These students hada great time with our PPY children andspent several hours with them. Childrenwere very excited to mix up with them andgather knowledge about Engginstitutions.
 At Sarnath, Varanasi
To know more about science, Sciences experiments were arranged in theevening at 5:00 to 6:00 pm twice in a week. On other days, this time slot wasused for tutorials and Advanced Lectures. In tutorials, childrenwere encouragedto ask their subject doubts whatever had been taught to them in morningregular classes. At least one subject instructor used to be present for thisproblem solving period.A total of 6 advanced lectures by 6 different IITK students and faculty memberswere arranged on the following topics: Mathematical Puzzles, Value of Pie, VedicMathematics, Chandrayaan-I Mission and Nanotechnology.Evening 6 to 7 pm was fixed for sports activities.In addition to all this, on each Saturday evening, group discussions werearranged. Some of the topics covered were: Necessity of conducting exams tillXthclass, Reality shows on television are creating pressure on children, IsIndia rising?Excursion trips were arranged to giver the children exposure of differentvarieties. These included (a) visit to Banarasand Sarnath(b) JK Temple (c)OP Sharma’s Magic Show in the city (d) visits to IITK Labs includingNanosciences, Hall VII and VIII (e) Airstrip

Children were really excited tosee all this. Especially looking at an airplane from inside and knowing itsfunctioning was a great experience.Inside airplane at flight Lab IITK
SURGE students at our Summer Camp
 
Four courses were run in June 09 at SSK. In each of them, on theaverage15 children took training. The courses were (a) Artificial Jewelry making (b)Beautician course (c) Sewing and Cutting and (d) Electrical AppliancesRepair.
Sopan SwavalambanKendra(SSK)
The sewing and cutting course is of 6-monthsduration and had started on May 1. Startingfrom cutting on old newspapers, by now thegirls have learned making Salwar-suits. Manyof them come wearing their own stitchedsuits. In this month one machine waspurchased and one was given temporarily bySopan worker Nazirto make 4 machines for20 girls.Girls learned making beautiful jewelries,mostly necklaces, in the two months Artificial jewelry course. The course finished in Juneitself but the final test and display will be inJuly.Several girls in the course of Beautician comefrom Ratanpur, a village 3 km away from thecenter. In the scorching heat of June, theycome walking from their place to attend theclasses 12.00 noon -2.00 PM and return backin the same mode. “HOSSALLON MEN HAIDUM” In the electrical appliance repair course,children learned home wiring, switches andsockets, motor winding etc. The instructor MrMalviyajiis highly committed and has a vastexperience of this area due to his own shop.Children did practical work by collectingdefective fans, coolers etc from the peoplearound, repaired them under guidance of theinstructor and returned them to the owners.MrsPoojaMishraand ShriJaiprakashjicoordinated all the events and theactivities at SSK.On 26th June, SSK students organized a Chhola-BhaturaParty. Theythemselves prepared these and also incurred the expenses. The purpose wasto get familiar with all the students of different courses at SSK.
