All celllsof Shiksha Sopan were actively involved the July 09 month. Science cellconducted two workshops and activities on solar eclipse. New batch of GahanAdhyayankendrastarted in this month. Swavalambankendrawas shifted to anew premise rented for this purpose. A number of IITK students were involved inwriting the study material for PPY children. The evening Learning Centers wererun efficiently at SAC and Barasirohi. Here is a description about this month’sactivities.
Science Cell
Science show at Opportunity School
Two of our Science cell volunteers RanjitandDeepak Mishra, both passed class 12 thisyear, conducted a Science show atOpportunity school in the IITK Campus on18
th
July. In the 90 minutes allotted for this,they showed about 10 science experimentsto class 6-8 children. The experiments weremainly on Balancing objects on a pivot andair-water pressure. The related scientificprinciples were lucidly explained. Theyconducted the show in a very entertainingand interacting mode involving the audienceto its best.
Lab Experiments for GAK Children
Science cell organized a lab session for students of class 10 and 12 studyoingstGahanadhyayanKendra on 19
th
July. Our volunteer Ranjitconducted itand trained them on use of VernierCalliperse. This aciutivitywill be done atleast once a month and GAK students will be made to perform theexperiments that are in their board syllabus.
Workshop at DPS Binjore
A two-day workshop on Science Experiments was conducted by ShikshaSopan on 21-22 July at Delhi Public School, Binjore, Punjab on the request of their Principal. Deepak Agnihotrifrom our Science Cell and Chandrashekharji,our EC member and PhD student at IITK went their with a number of experiments to be shown. They were joined by Dr M S Marwahaof Chandigarh
 
who had attended the NWIPT workshops atIITK. About 30 experiments covering variousaspects of science were conducted on the twodays. Chandrashekharjigave a talk on Nanomaterials to expose the students on thisfrontline research area.The host teachers praised all aspects of theworkshop and expressed their gratitudetowards Shiksha Sopan for giving them a newinsight.
Solar Eclipse activities
July 22 Solar eclipse was unique in many senses especially for India where agood part of the nation witnessed long totality. Shiksha Sopan used thisopportunity to educate its children on various aspects of astronomy related tothe Sun, earth and moon and also to inculcate scientific way of thinking.On 21

July we arranged a lecture on solar ecpliseat SAC yoga room. Childrenfrom all the Evening centers, Sopan Vidyalay, Sopan SwavalambanKendra,GahanAdhyanKendra and also from Opportunity School were invited. The PowerPoint lecture was delivered by Ms AkshataSingh, an M Tech Student fromElectrical Engg, before the 110 children present. A question answer session wasthen undertaken by Dr H C Verma to further clarify the concepts.On 22
nd
July the eclipse was scheduled to start at 5.29 AM and Shiksha Sopanvolunteers assembled at the rooftop of the residence of Dr H C Verma at 5 AMto witness the this natural phenomena. They made their own Pin hole camerasand projected the images of the sun on a vertical wall to see variuosphases of the sun. The image of the sun was also captured by a video camera and wasprojected on a different wall using a multimedia projector whereall could seethe phases of eclipsed sun clearly.In a novel effort they used abranch of Neemtree to makenatural pin holes from the gapsbetween the leaves. Theallowed to witness aspectacular scene wherehundred of images of theeclipsed sun were formedtogether on a vertical wall.They also did some scientific experiments on the eclipse effects. Usingappropriate sensors, they measured the light intensity (droppedto 157 lux)and the temperature of atmosphere (dropped to 28.3 C) at that rooftop duringthe eclipse.
 
Sopan SwavalambanKendra(SSK)
New batch of GahanAdhyayanKendrastarted in the first week of July. With ShriAshishBhateja, ME PhD student, as the incharge, the classes are going on quitesystematically. In the beginning of thesession a meeting of instructors andcoordinators was arranged with all thestudents and their parents where themotivation of Shiksha Sopan was explainedand the role of parents were discussed.A test was given on 26
th
July to ascertainthe progress for all subjects and in allclasses. The papers were set by theinstructors with external moderation. Theresults are being analyzed
GAK Activities
A popular lecture on Stamps with the title “Philetaly: The hobby of the kings and theking of the hobbies”was given by MrManojMoharana, PHD student in ME to all GAKstudents after the test on 26
th
July.The courses at SSK are very effective. Inthe beautician course, still going on, girlswere given mostly practice session on doinga complete work. In one such session, theyprepared a make up of Bride, some of thepictures are shown here.The artificial Jewelry Course in now over. Allthe girls are now well equipped to makebeautiful jewelries in almost professionalmanner. The closing of this course wasdone on July 1 where the girls made theassigned items on the spot and a numberof Campus Ladies evaluated andappreciated them.The other courses going on are Sewing andElectrical appliance Repairing.The whole project is being supervised byMrsPoojaMishraof our Campus and SriJaiprakashMaurya.
