 About the GESI program
 Welcome
 Welcome to the GlobalEngagement Summer Institute! If  you’re an undergraduate who’s passionately committed to global justice and internationaldevelopment, this is the programfor you.Run by Northwestern University’sCenter for Global Engagementand supported abroad by theFoundation for SustainableDevelopment, the GlobalEngagement Summer Institute program will bring togetherstudents from universities around the country to learn from and work with communities in India, Argentina, and Uganda.Going beyond traditional studyabroad experiences, the program will place you a team setting with ahost nonprofit organization where you’ll learn about internationalcommunity development bydeveloping and implementing areal project in areas from youtheducation to microfinance andbeyond.If you’re looking for a program where you learn by doing and you’re ready to get your handsdirty in the pursuit of global socialchange, GESI is for you.
Program Components
The GESI program is anexpansion of the CGE’s“ENGAGE Uganda” program, which has sent almost 40 students to work in team based communitydevelopment in Uganda.The GESI program features threecomponents: a 10-day lead-inInstitute on Northwestern’scampus in Evanston, IL, a seven- week team-based projectimmersion with host nonprofits ineither India, Argentina, orUganda, and a short wrap-upsummit in Chicago.The 10-day Institute will featureintensive course work focused oncommunity development, teamdynamics in internationaldevelopment, and the local history, politics, and culture of India, Argentina, and Uganda. The program focuses in part on “Asset-Based Community Development”,a framework for harnessing theresources of individuals andcommunities to ensure localownership and sustainability of development efforts. In addition to lectures and discussions withNorthwestern professors andguest speakers, students will havea chance to bond with the five person team with which they willspend the summer.Teams will take group flights to their summer destination:Udaipur, India, La Plata, Argentina, or Jinja, Uganda.Grouped in teams of five, they will work with host communitydevelopment nonprofits to designand implement some small scale project over the next seven weeks.Living in home-stays with localcommunity members, the students will be supported by theFoundation for SustainableDevelopment, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that will supportstudent relationships with theirhost organizations and provide incountry support for health, safety,and all other issues. Throughout the seven weeks, students will becommunicating withNorthwestern faculty, and will be treated to a number of guestlectures and seminars about thelocal political and cultural context.Finally, students will return toChicago for a brief final programdebrief where they will have thechance to share their ideas,frustrations and inspirations with their peers returning from otherlocations.The program will run from mid-June to mid-August and will givestudents the equivalent of twocourse credits.
