Noah RaberThe Next Step in Computer Graphics
Over the past 20 or so years, computer graphics has made giant leaps intechnology, but what’s next? What do we have in store for us now? I believe thatthe best is yet to come. We have gotten closer and closer to making our videogames look as realistic as possible. Games such as Army of Two and Resident Evil 5look almost life-like compared to older games like Star Fox or Golden Axe.What are we to expect next? I think that we are going to see more and morephotorealistic games in the future. Soon, playing a video game will look like you arelooking through the eyes of a real human being. You will not be able to tell adifference between life and the virtual world. Each game will still have its own lookand feel but they will all have photorealistic graphics and animations giving theplayer the feel that they are in the game more than ever. When someone plays agame now, they get into the game but still know that it is a video game. Soon, theplayer will no longer be able to tell when they are playing a game, watching amovie, or living their life except for the fact that they will feel no pain when theiravatar gets shot in a game or when their quarterback gets taken down with a bone-shattering hit. The things that will make players feel like games are more realistic are thephysics engines that can be expected in the future. The video game industry usesseveral different physics engines. Some are made specifically for certain games andsome games use the same engine as previous games. The physics engines allow forobjects to react to actions the same way they would in real life. When a watermelongets shot in a game, it will explode into many pieces and the pieces will fly all overand bounce off the floor and walls just like they would if you were to shoot one inreal life. If you were to shoot a tin can in a game with a good graphics engine, the
